I absolutely love Plexamp for Linux. I was recently booted of Google Play Music. I absolutely hate Youtube Music and refuse to switch to it. That’s when I noticed Plex had a music player Plexamp! Not only does it have android compatibility, but Desktop support and Linux support at that! All my machines/laptops and even my server are Linux. I already use Plex, this made the switch a no brainer! I downloaded all my purchased music, placed it into my new music library. So my experiences.
Adding to linux was a breeze. created a /opt/plexamp/ folder and dropped appimage there and made it executable (this is a MUST, linux doesn’t download files and immediately mark the executable). No Icon? No Problem. . I dropped the Icon in the /opt/plexamp/ folder by the appimage file. Used “Edit Applications” in KDE (right click menu/start button), added it application and set the icon. So easy! if someone can turn this into an SVG icon, it would be even better! I’m not really any good at inkscape so someone else will need to give that a go.
Pros: I love the UI! Its identical to the Android UI. one UI for all makes the usage super memorable. It’s just a Music Player so it makes sense that its clean, small, and simple! Appimage removes the need for crazy shared libraries and makes updates super easy. Reliable (its self hosted!). Visualisations look great on desktop! I love the “always on top” for the desktop. The only way to make it better is make plasma widget for it, but that’s quite a lot to ask, and this app is excellent as is.
Cons: I wish I could increase its size. It feels kinda small and sometimes (my monitor resolution is 49" 3840x1080) the images appear a tad blurry. I’d like to increase the size just a tad. It’s not terrible, or a show stopper. Since its a music player, it being small and out of the way is kind of nice sometimes. Opening the playlist on desktop results in no way to close the playlist unless you to scroll. It took me a while to figure this out. I kept trying to click/drag like you would on your phone. I tried tapping the playlist button to see if it would hide the playlist back, but nope. that would be a nice suggestion. clicking the playlist will show and hide the playlist. An instruction guide would be nice. How do downloads work for Android and Desktop? Where to the mp3s go? Can you select a folder for downloads/cache? Also Repeat album? Repeat Playlist? Repeat Song? Where are these options? I’d really like to see these. I’m sure repeat playlist could cover all the repeat options. Also Random would be nice.
Thanks Plex team. I finally have a home for my music. It’s good to be home.
