I recently got a new Denon AirPlay 2 compatible audio receiver, and I was looking forward to playing my lossless music collection organized in Plex (ALAC, 16 bit 44.1 kHz). Unfortunately, playing from Plexamp, it seems that there are frequent audio glitches and pops (kind of like a skipping vinyl record, but much faster). After testing different parts of the chain (Wi-Fi/wired network, audio files, devices sending the music, different apps, etc.), it appears that Plexamp is the piece that’s the issue… Playing the same lossless files from Prism on iOS does not create the same issue. Playing lossless from Apple Music from any device also does not have the same issue. Has anyone else encountered this? I don’t see any posts on here about this, but I do see requests for AirPlay 2 for low latency and multi-room audio, and I’m not sure if that’s related. Thanks.
plexamp currently uses airplay “real-time” streaming mode … it supports cd quality lossless and preserves any plexamp eq settings, but it is prone to drops and glitches due to the minimal (~ 2 sec) data buffer
prism and apple music use airplay “buffered” streaming mode, which means lossy aac audio in exchange for lower latency, more robust connection, and probably no real-time eq adjustments
my opinion, it would be nice to have an option in plexamp to choose between the two airplay streaming modes
Thank you @tgp-2. Learned something new… Disappointing that AirPlay 2 drops down from lossless to lossy AAC without really providing a indication to the end user playing lossless…
