I've mentioned this before how when playing media over lan with Plex Media Center without transcoding that it doesn't register via now playing.
Not his fault. There is a lot of information spewed throughout these forums... information from old threads are not always accurate ( even though yes, PMC does not work with now playing and probably never will )
I have updated the main page on both threads to state a Client that supports Now Playing is required and PMC is known not to work.

I'm actually watching a show at work, while my PMS box is at home, so I'm not on the LAN. I am using Plex Media Center, but I don't understand why that makes a difference, or why transcoding versus direct play should make a difference either.
I am now watching the same show through the web interface (at work), and the "now playing" tab now shows that I'm watching. Also:
Plex requires a client to check into the PMS during playback. That is how the now playing feature of the PMS actually works. This means some clients will not work with now playing feature until they are updated to "check in". It has been state elsewhere on the forum that PMC is not supported and probably never will be now that PHT is the new replacement. Also note, the original jailbreak ATV2 app does't work either.

ljunkie is of course, correct. Plex Media Center (PMC) is a dead product as far as development is concerned, and has been that way for quite a while now. Due to that it does not support any recently added features to the Plex Media Server (PMS), and never will.
Plex/Web on the other hand is still under development by Plex, and will be for the foreseeable future, as it is also part of the current Server interface. Due to this it works with all the new features in the PMS, like Now Playing.
Plex Home Theater (PHT) is the product that is currently under development that is meant to replace PMC as a PC Home Theater Client, but it is a Plex Pass only product at this time. But it does support Now Playing, and the other newer features that have been added to the PMS.
All right, so notifications are working for me now, tested on iPhone, iPad, Roku, and Plex/Web interfaces. I'm going to switch my work PC to PHT, due to the issues with PMC that Pruitt62 has brought to my attention. I'll run some tests using that, but I am completely satisfied with PlexWatch. Ijunkie, you have my utmost thanks and admiration. Keep up the good work; I'm off to make a donation. ;)

Thanks! I am wondering if my donations even work or if paypal is just taking the money ;) It's been quiet on the donation front for both rarflix/plexWatch. Note, I am not concerned about getting donations, I am just not sure I trust paypal.

Successfully donated, Ijunkie; got the confirmation email and everything, so check your records.
Also, tested Plex Home Theater on the LAN last night, and got successfull notification from it. Dude, you straight up rock. I'm also going to recommend RARFlix to my peeps with Rokus. Thanks again to you and the others for the help. Check it out:
any plan on having the web frontend with this? i would love the webfrontend, but dont want to have to compile perl or create a webserver. thank you!!
I do not plan on making an installer if that is what you are asking.
1) plexWatch.exe is already compiled to run on windows. You do not have to install perl at all. Please read the directions on the first page of this thread.
2) plexWatch/Web is a web front end, but it requires a webserver to be running because it's a web front end.
I promise if this has been asked already - two pretty basic questions - I got it running thanks to the XAMPP suggestion - thank you! Using the web interface is awesome. Two things though
- Does PlexWatch.exe have to be run each time I want it to be updated? so I'm guessing just run a scheduled task? Or does it update hourly on its own?
- Have you ever seen where it only updates on the home wifi? ie I was just watching a couple Simpsons episodes at the gym on LTE and it wasn't updated in the history.
Or would this be better asked in the PlexWeb frontend section?

It's documented on the first page, but yes, you need to run it every minute. You can use the vbs scripts in the zip. It's a little vague, but even if you don't send notifications, you still have to run the "notify" action to log the data.
Automatically notify on watching/watched content: * schedule a task (every minute) to execute c:\plexWatch\plexWatchNotify.vbs (specify the start in folder as c:\plexWatch\ )
Automatically notify on Recently Added Content: * schedule a task (every 5 minutes or more) to execute c:\plexWatch\plexWatchRecentlyAdded.vbs (specify the start in folder as c:\plexWatch\ )

It doesn't matter what network you are on when playing, it does however depend on your client. If your watch is showing up on "Now Watching" on plexWeb, then it will work. Only a few guesses why it didn't work:
* you don't have it running every minutes yet?
* I have noticed now playing doesn't work perfectly yet on iOS when playing synced content
Is it required to run every minute? I have it set to run every hour. Still only showing downloads on the local network, nothing outside of the network on LTE or outside wfi. The only reason I didn't want it running every minute is because I could see it eating up a lot of memory, truth or not?

Needs to run every minute. Will not eat memory. It runs, it exits, it won't run more than once.
