Plugins removal?

When I tested this a few months back, it blocked all Roku-centric traffic inclusing channel updates and ads. IP addresses are preferable since multiple domain names can resolve to a single IP. Thes 4 IPs were the common ones that Roku used.

That said, test it out and make sure they haven’t changed anything since that post was made. They cluld have added more IP addresses or updated the Roku OS to prevent this kind of block.

My users (family) don’t need ANY of your latest plugins,
News, Podcasts, Tidal, Web Shows… So why don’t you shut them down so that we don’t waste electricity in your datacenter?

All we use are Ted Talks and HelloHue.

and I’d be damned if I’ll share the control over my home to Plex cloud solution, even if it’s only the lights in our home.

I’ve already blocked the Android app from updating and the last version that supports HelloHue will be the last version my server upgrades to.

I moved from Kodi to plex, because i wanted 1 badass server to do the heavy work, and light clients at the TV, and then I LOOOOOVED the ability to use plugins

from my point of view, you can rip out tidal, news, podcasts and web shows…

would be much more appreciated with more ways to organize my own media libraries, like stand-up and audiobooks.

totaly agree with that.
I love plex for my PERSONAL media not for INTERNET media …

I use plugins extensively as well. I wish they would reconsider this decision.

I really feel scammed because I spend money on a lifetime plex pass. And I didn’t spend that money a TIDAL app, I spend this money on an easy to setup all purpose server with plugins.
Even worse having already spend the money there is no way to show them my disgust by cancelling etc.

Seconded on Trakt.tv. I’d be happy if that is the only one they let us keep. Otherwise, I’m considering not renewing my Plex Pass.

You’ll have to hope they decide to keep it. Even then you’ll need to wait until the code it into the application. Even then it will likely not be quite like Trakt.tv. Just like the stats dashboard they recently introduced is not quite like Tautulli, neither will their Trakt.tv functionality be quite like the real thing.

I bought plex lifetime to allow me to run a server with my media on it.
The only people who use it are my immediate family.
I encode all of it, i have spent the last 30 years in video and have been encoding video on pc’s since the days of the pinnacle dc10+
It sits on a gigabit network and nothing requires transcoding so no heavy electicity usage for that.
My connection to the outside world is the fastest i can get where i live , 2.5mbs down 480kbs up , i dont want to run things from the cloud.
All the recent changes have for me , been for the worse.
None of the Tidal stuff interests me, Its another licence required. @ $19.99 / month
Pulling plugins means my dvr no longer works, the removal of plugins means i can no longer connect to my satellite receiver and get a epg and/or record.
I have to do that directly on the receiver , then copy files into plex to allow me to serve the recorded tv via plex server.

I have also been very disappointed in plex. Plugin removal plus all the stuff (junk?) like podcast, news which plex has added are useless for me. Plex certainly is not about your media anymore but all about their media.

Sad but true. By all accounts their decision is final. According to Plex Inc. only about 2% of people were using Plugins anyway. You wouldn’t guess so few given the amount of people that have complained here.

Initially I thought about going with choice one. Stop updating my Plex servers. But at the end I decided to go with option two. One of the reasons is that, since you have to authenticate using their cloud service, one day they could force you to update by changing the authentication API. This would render your server unable to authenticate you.

Perfect example, and I quote from December 2018 Roku release;

Though not upgrading server is a choice. Not upgrading apps on a computer is a choice, client updates are pretty much forced on embedded devices such as TVs and video streaming boxes (like Roku, AppleTV, etc)
Not updating the server could easily prevent the client apps from working in the future.

That is true.

Not upgrading your server is not a long term alternative one way or another.

Do what I did. Send an email or tweet to Today telling them you are boycotting their product b cause of the m is it has made to Plex with it’s crobar integration.

Yeah, going to have to echo a lot of the sentiment here. I bought a Lifetime Plex Pass to support development of a home media server that I could have some semblance of control over with my own content. Podcasts, Tidal, Webshows, etc., are all kind of neat bonuses I guess? But they’re not something I or my family use. Plugins are something I use, and want to have the option of using still. Ripping them out entirely removes core functionality that I want in my server and part of what I actually wanted supported when I paid for my Plex Pass.

If you absolutely have to “remove” them, then just stop supporting them and even hide the link if the user doesn’t have any installed, but don’t rip out the functionality for those of us that use them.

(Edit: Though it does look like this is pretty much what did happen.
You will still be able to manually install plugins on the server itself, even after the Plugin Directory is removed.

So carry on then.)

Don’t be confused by that statement.
Plex has already removed the “channel store” aka “Plug-in store” that we used to be able to use to install their “supported” plug-ins with a single click of a button in Plex web.
We’ve always been able to install plug-ins manually, and still can.

As it stands now, somewhere down the road, even manual installation will no longer exist, likely after most (all?) client ability to use plug-ins has been removed. Plex for Roku v6 was one of the first to have it removed.

I’d imagine that would be still several years away, I can’t imagine that they will be rewriting many apps

With the public fiasco of the Roku update, and now the upcoming release of the Roku update again, with a revamped UI, all clients will make the shift to the new UI, at that point, you can kiss plugins goodbye. It is coming far faster than you know.

This…

It’s difficult to determine what someone means by “several”, but my guess is about 2, maybe 3 years tops. That may sound like a long time, but it passes by quickly, especially when many of us rely on Plug-ins for various tasks/content/features.

A new UI does not necessarily mean that the app will need rewritten, most apps will use generic styles that mean that individual pages would need little updating.

Saying that, I would still really like a replacement to be actively considered and announced by Plex. The solutions that Elan has mentioned in the past (using the same interface as podcasts and web shows) seems like a good idea, and one that I hope they go with.
