PMS on Raspberry Pi buffering

Server Version#: 1.16.0.1226
Player Version#: various

I have noticed that recently I have experienced buffering on movies and TV shows more frequently than I have in the past and, following the most recent update to 1.16.0.1226 now everything buffers constantly. Not wanting to believe that it was my little Raspberry Pi I have tried a different NAS, tried different clients, hard-wired and wireless, tried attaching a USB drive to the Raspberry Pi and tried converting my media to H264 AAC before playing, all to no avail.

Media that I have played previously, without any buffering at all now buffers constantly.

In desperation I installed PMS on a HP ProLiant server running Windows 10 and now no buffering.

Is there anything I can do to help the Raspberry Pi Model 2B to deliver movies and TV shows without buffering or should I accept that it is no longer up to the job? Should I be looking at the new Model 4 or play safe with a Model 3A+?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

David

It all depends on your clients and their Direct Play and Direct Stream capabilities. Please check the client to make sure “Original” quality is selected. We have to find the reason why your Raspberry Pi is suddenly asked to do video transcoding.

Thanks @drmagoo, I have tested playback through my browser on my Windows 10 laptop and through the app on my iPhone and both play without buffering. All TVs buffer and all TVs are Samsungs but not all the same model. I have checked and confirmed that “Original” quality is selected.

So I guess you are hit by the limitations / bugs of the Samsung app. Please take a look at the Smart TV section of the forum. There are numerous posts regarding Samsung and buffering.

Thanks @drmagoo, it seems my initial assessment was incorrect, playback from the HP server is as gittery as the Raspberry Pi.

I’ll take a look at the Smart TV posts and raise a new post there if I need to.
