PMS on Raspberry Pi - what format music files for direct play?

Hi, complete noob here with setting up a Plex media server on a Pi 4. I already have a server on a Windows 10 laptop but I’m looking at whether it’s feasible to run a second server on a Pi 4 with USB storage. The use case for this is accessing this outside my LAN, and via the ios Plex and Plexamp apps on an iphone.

I’m ok with the advice about set-up (mainly), but from what I’ve read so far, transcoding is just a no when running a server from a Pi. I think I’m fine with the advice about video properties which should facilitate direct play, but I can’t find any advice about which audio formats/encodes will direct play from my Pi PMS accessed on my iphone while outwith my LAN. At the moment, my files are FLAC and going by my experience with how well Plexamp transcodes these to Opus (they sound great), I’m fine with having these files in a lossy format - after all, it’s not for hi-fi listening.

I have pre-emptively started converting a few of these to Opus but I am really unsure if these will direct play in my situation. I have searched in various places online but have drawn a blank, unless I’m being dense and missed something.

Seems that most situations will direct play AAC and MP3 as direct play, but I’d prefer Opus if possible, because they sound better - is anyone able to advise from experience or otherwise? Thanks!

There’s a very simple answer to what will Direct Play and what won’t.

What does the device support? If the device supports Opus, and reports that in the Plex app, it’ll direct play.

Thanks! Of course. I have no idea why I didn’t think of that…
