PMS Tiered Storage Support

Hello! Great work on this SW, and all the App and IoT Device Integrations!!!

I recently ran out of storage on my PMS, so as I was shopping around I thought to myself: "Self, Why don't you just delete some things you haven't watched in awhile?".

This spawned me to look into if PMS supported Tiered storage.

Basically a method in which I could identify drives that were Gold / Silver / Bronze (SSD, SAS(10k), SATA(7200 -> 5400) or USB).

Then a method within PMS to auto Archive things to the lower cost (higher volume) sized drives, something like if it hasn't been viewed in 100+ days archive it and update database on location to the lower speed drives.

This would allow me to keep new content that I and my family want to watch more frequently on the Gold level of drives, and if I want to 1-off get back to Lawrence of Arabia (my mother loves that movie), it's still available.

Is there development going on for this? Can I help with outlining the functionality of it? I'm a Storage Engineer for a pretty large company, and love this software and would love to contribute.

Thoughts from others in the forum?

To me this sounds like it’s beyond the scope of Plex, moving files around based on certain criteria and such. Sounds like it would be better suited to some software that could run on your NAS or whatever, which you could make as flexible as you like.

I like that Plex is abstracted away from my hardware set up, I don’t need it to manage my filesystem.

I agree that Plex shouldn't control how I treat "Volumes" on my storage... If I want to prioritize a specific set of LUNs over other, or Mount Points or Windows Drives :... But integration with Plex Database and Library is key. The Storage is unaware of the file content on it, and truth be told I don't like having anything else other than Plex manage my content (not Couch Potato, or SickBeard) once it has been added into Plex's Inventory.

Having Plex just manage active content vs. stale content, in "Drive Letter" or "Mount Points" of preference would be awesome. I could do this now manually, by creating another Video Directory for "Archived Movies" and have it on another mount point, but the beauty of Plex is it's automation of tasks, and it's simple to use interfaces....

Just thoughts..
