PMS transcoding h264 broken on DS920+

This fixed the issue for me.

@thepauly

What fixed it? Fresh codecs download ?

Yeah renaming the folder then playing a video redownloaded a new Codecs folder

Thank you!

Just did this, but unfortunately still getting

ā€œPlayback Error: Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install.ā€

@ChuckPa

I followed your steps, and it has created a new folder. However the issue remains.

I only have the libhevc_decoder.so codec, the rest always have the Download failed: Failed to verify SHA1sum of codec! and Error configuring transcoder: Encoder install failed: libmp3lame

It seems to be affecting MacOS clients as well - I am still able to watch on iOS devices.

I’m using a windows installation and I can’t find this folder. What is the path?

i think : %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server

One Windows user reported it didn’t help him.
I very much would like another datapoint given I have success on Linux.

Thanks for that path, I found it. Unfortunately, I am still receiving the same error

Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install.

Additional details from the console:

[Req#217/Transcode] Codecs: Download failed: Failed to verify SHA1sum of codec!
[Req#951/Transcode] Error configuring transcoder: Decoder install failed: dca

for me in linux, it failed to verify SHA1sum of libmp3lame codec

i’m using windows and it didn’t work for me either. i tried following your steps you listed earlier and when that didn’t work i uninstalled everything, restarted pc, reinstalled pms and set it up again, but i’m getting the same error message (using web player and the windows app give the same error)

Windows user here. Server on win10, couple different clients. Playback on web browser on windows works flawlessly, but app on samsung tv gives codec error. Tested after deleting codecs folder and restarting plex server…

@mmmalecki

Thanks for the report.

We have this problem pretty well isolated as to both cause and how to cure it.

To cure it will likely take a rebuild of all the codecs (several hours of compile time).

I can’t speculate too much as I’m not a member of the build team but that’s my basic understanding of what the resolution will take.

I hope they prove me wrong and have a trivial solution :pray:

For anyone who just wants to get back up and running right now:

  1. Shut down Plex
  2. (Unsure if necessary) Navigate to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server and rename Codecs to Codecs-old to force Plex to build a new Codecs folder once we restart it.
  3. Navigate to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Updates
  4. Select an update PRIOR to the one from today - I chose 1.41.3.9314 which was just before today’s date.
  5. Run the .exe - I didn’t even uninstall the current instance. The installer will recognize that the current version is newer than the version in the installer, but you can proceed anyways.
  6. Start up Plex - double check that the Codecs folder was built, then test a transcode.

You have now rolled back the latest update.

Just wanted to add an additional data point. I have Plex Media Server running on Windows.

Deleting the Codecs folder did not work for me. It generates a new Codecs folder, then a subfolder ā€œdb205…5b2-windows-x86_64ā€ with nothing inside it.

Tried Eric’s method of installing previous builds, and this also does not work. (tried 1.41.3.9314 and 1.41.2.9200)

I tried this method and it worked flawlessly!
