Transcoder Crashing after update to Plex Pass v. 1.11.1.4730 from 1.9.x

Good evening,

This is my first post, and I’m about 6 months into using Plex.
I’m running my PMS on a Windows 2012 box, When I initially installed Plex 6 months ago, I had a problem with certain content not playing, I was getting a transcoder crash error message, and codec error messages. I spoke with a friend, and we checked out my Codec directory - and I had none of the needed codecs. I stopped the services, dropped in the codecs and fired everything back up. Life was good until today.

This morning 1/27 I upgraded to the new version of 1.11.1.4730. I did an in-place upgrade. Meaning I shut the services down, did the upgrade, rebooted and came back up. Everything seemed fine. Now that I’ve had it running for the majority of the day - I’m starting to see the same issues coming back.

I’ve tried this with multiple TV shows, multiple Movies, and some play - and some do not. I’ve received the error in the following ways

  1. iphone on-network (same local network) trying to stream movie “a” and tv-show “a”
  2. iphone off-network (4G) trying to stream movie “a” and tv-show “a”
  3. Firestick on-network
  4. Firestick off-network

All are giving me the same sample errors of “conversion failed, transcoder failed to start”.

Steps I’ve taken to try to solve this.

  1. I did a full uninstall of plex, rebooted, re-installed 1.11.1.4730.
I then tried to start watching the movie and tv show that are currently not functional. Both failed.
  2. I then checked the codec directory, noticed Codecs weren’t there and stopped the services, dropped a copy of the codecs in place, and restarted the services…same results.
  3. I did a full uninstall of Plex again, and installed the Public release (1.10.1.4602) And repeated steps 1 and 2. Still no joy.

I’d love some help - I’m happy to pull logs or whatever is needed. I must admit, I’m a bit frustrated, and I’d greatly appreciate some assistance.

You should provide logs

For transcoder crashes - unless it is a known issue - a sample file / clip giving a crash would also be needed with the server logs

https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201035968-generating-sample-files-from-media/

Thank you sa2000 for providing the links for the log generation etc. I’ll get those sorted now and sent over.

Media logs attached.

FYI - it will say v/ 1.9 now - I even tried to go back to the last version that worked, and that no longer works either :frowning:

I’m making a sample file now to attached and test

Share for the video sample

could you please add the sample to a test library (make sure it does not have the word sample as part of the name as it will get skipped when scanning) and confirm that the transcoder crashes with this clip and please get me the server logs for this test as well

Thank you

Done per request.
Sidenote: Those were the steps I did originally and should have been what you saw in the logs

I did grab a screenshot, it’s trying to do audio transcoding from DCA to AC3, and video is Direct Stream.
I did this from my iphone, on the same network.

Could you get me a directory listing of the codecs directory showing filename, date / time last modified, created, file size

C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Codecs\6bd6751-1276-windows-i386

and are there are any other codecs directories ? if so could you do the same for the one created before this one

Attached is a screenshot…

can’t see the file sizes

and the creation date / time

Zipped and attached - as I’m guessing you may wish to try my codec to see if something is corrupted?

Sorry about that - updated screenshot below…

If you can’t see it - they were created on 1/28 @ 12:49am

can you explain to me the 15th October 2017 dates?
Where did these codecs come from?
What time / date was the directory created ?

The codecs should have got downloaded on first launch of v1.11.1.4730-6967ec0b1
Was this at 00:49 am on 28th January ?

Ok, when I first installed the system back in August, it was on a mac, and i was testing. I liked it so I migrated it over to a new server (the windows box). Codecs didn’t work so a buddy sent me a zip of his codecs…these were from that october date.

These codecs came from my friends Plex system, that was running the same version as mine at the time.

The directory was re-created when I did the fresh install.

Yes the fresh install was from that date.
Should I shut down plex, kill the directory and do a repair?

I cannot support you whilst you have tampered with the released software

shut down plex media server

delete directory

C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Codecs\6bd6751-1276-windows-i386

relaunch Plex Media Server

and we can start again with fresh evidence of any crash and new directory print

just so I understand … these codecs were in 1.9.x PMS version directory. Did the update to 1.11.1.4730 copy them across to this new directory or did you do that?
