Possible PMS setup with a NUC

Hi,

I am planning on building a low powered, always on Plex Media Server. So far I have this planned in my head, I think it will be enough, but I would like to hear the opinions of all you lovely people aswell!

First off;

<span style="font-size:14px;"><span><a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00I60Z8Q2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE'>Intel DN2820FYKH (Celeron N2820 2.39GHz)</a>&nbsp;for the processing power, was thinking Win7 on this since I have the most experience, but whilst reading up Linux/OpenELEC seems to be the best.</span></span>

Crucial 4GB RAM (1.3v)

Kingston 60GB SSD - Installation files and PHT.

2xWD Red 3TB drives

1xWD Green 2TB drive  - The reason for this is because in my PMS at the moment, I have a WD Green 2tb drive, and everywhere I have read people say it is best not to mix and match drives for stability (I know I will be having a mix between the Red and Green drives but I thought 2x 3tb Red and 2x 2td greens would be the best rather than 2x 3th Red, 1x 2tb green and 1x 2tb red)

Hard Drive Enclosure - Connected to the NUC via USB 3.0, the plan was to have a software RAID 10 with striping 1x3tb Red with 1x2tb green and then mirroring that to the other pair.

Would very much like to hear from you lot with your opinions. Will be streaming from this with Android, iOS, Chromecast and remotely.

Just 2 things.

First if you are doing much transcoding that CPU may really struggle to keep up. So consider that.

Secondly I have heard of some issue were USB 3.0 has some sort of slow start issue. Can’t really elaborate on it though since I have only heard about it. But it may warrant some research.

Hi!

did follow up on this config?  i'm looking for a nuc and would like to know if the Celeron N2820 2.39GHz is powerfull enough.

Powerful enough for what? If transcoding is a must then, no - https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Celeron+N2820+%40+2.13GHz&id=2145

The request "Is that CPU powerful enough?" is discussed in tens of threads.

Case Study 1 --- I NEED TRANSCODE -

The flow chart to make the correct decision is as follows:

1 - Do I need 1080p/10Mbps transcoding? Yes (if NOT go to Case Study 2)

2 - How many concurrent transcoded streams? N

3 - Which CPU?

Result: N x 2000 Passmark points ----> CPU.

Example: N = 2 ---> 4000 ---> Intel Core i3-4110M @ 2.60GHz - https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-4110M+%40+2.60GHz&id=2453

Side notes

Plex is conservative declaring 2000 points, they are needed to stream 1080p at 10Mbps bit rate.....if you have lower bitrate videos you need a less powerful CPU, if you have 720p only...the same, less powerful.

2000 points are needed for 1080p at 10Mbps, stick that requirement and you will not be underpowered.

Case Study 2 --- I DON?T NEED ANY TRANSCODE -

Result: Any device able to run PMS, CPU is not important.

Thank you all for your answers.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply! No I didn’t follow up with this build, instead I built a gaming computer that also doubles up as my Plex server. Specs are here: The Mandarin by Juggins13 - Intel Core i5-6600K, GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, NZXT S340 Elite ATX Mid Tower - PCPartPicker
