POster/Data/Metadata Never Preserved?

I have upgraded my HHD and/or moved yo new Macs - am I missing a setting that preserves my data (poster/metadata) - I have converted thousands of movies and Tv shows and every-time I have to start from ear scratch, I prefer the original poster look of mpvies in my on screen index - shouldn’t there be a setting that maintains that without rebuilding from scratch EVERY TIME? I can understand some conflicts and errors but nearly ALL of them? (Yes, I’m a paid Plex pass member) … I also have a lot of movies with 2 or more versions like Blade Runner, why do I have to split apart EVERY TIME … how about a setting that lists EVERY CONFLICT and that I can fix it without having to go through my folder to manually look and sync?? Or links to the file name and I can fix it once and for all as its file name??

Plex’s metadata also hates Looney Tunes. Lumping a bunch of shorts as full length movies …

It would be great if we had a main database that when I point out I am upgrading to a new server or Mac, it asks if I want to sync just like when I get a new Mac or new iphone, it syncs the old data so I do not start from scratch - especially since I keep the same folder structure.

Same with some folders got too unwieldy so I changed the names and moved some films around but ALL the poster/metadata info was lost - why?? If this never occurred to anyone, please offer this feature.

Plex’s instructions for moving a server install are here: Move an Install to Another System | Plex Support. As long as you follow that, the upgrade process should be much smoother. In addition to that, if you really want to ensure that posters aren’t reset after you upgrade, you can enable local media assets and save the posters next to your media (see Local Media Assets - Movies and Local Media Assets - TV Shows).

As for

Since you have a Plex Pass, you should probably add Edition information to the file name (Multiple Editions - Movies | Plex Support), since otherwise Plex will assume that you have multiple versions of the exact same cut (Multi-Version Movies | Plex Support) so will be grouped together.

And finally,

The default TV agent will use TMDB episode ordering by default, and they don’t have a TV show entry for the old cartoons, since they technically aired as separate short films. You would have to ensure that your files are named according to TVDB’s entry (Looney Tunes - TheTVDB.com), and that you’ve set the library/show to use TVDB ordering:

Thanks, I’ll take a look. Are you saying that Looney Tunes should be marked as Tv Shows and not movie shorts as I currently have them? Thanks!

Ah, I misread and thought you were trying to get them to show up as a TV show. How are your files named? It’s fine to list them as movies, but you’re likely to get incorrect matches/bad merges if you aren’t following Plex’s expected contentions (the full name with the year in parentheses, plus the tmdb/imdb ID in curly braces to be extra sure it matches correctly, e.g. Porky's Last Stand (1940) {tmdb-230671}.mkv).

Thanks for the heads up. I have them named Looney Tunes-Porky’s Last Stand.mp4 (no date as I simply converted them from my discs - just making sure the name matched but did not add the year … guess I will have to do that. Thanks.

I have a few thousand movies. It is way too much work to create a file for each poster … since PLEX offers a choice of posters for 99% of my movies, it seems thee is a better way to save my choices without me having to create a specific JPEG for every movie. It would be nice if it could save this data either as a link or as a file on my HDD … I can understand most people don’t care but for us 10% fanatics, it would be useful … my movie HDD is 16TB so a even a few GB’s for JPEG files is not a big deal. I hope you consider adding this feature. I think we understand it’s not 100% perfect but like album artwork attached to our MP3’s, it sees doable.

And yes, I know the naming scheme set up by Plex works for most “edition” movies but of course, there are a few films in my thousands that are either my fault they are not file name correct or just an error … it would be nice if PLEX could generate a “split apart?” report so I just just look it over and go through each and see if it does not to be split apart.

Thanks.
