Problems playing DTS Blu-ray rips

Hey all

For the past couple months I’ve had major issues getting a lot of my MKV Blu-ray rips to direct play via my Roku Ultra. These are movies that would play just fine previously. Most of the problem movies are DTS HD. The DTS HD track would typically not play after dialogue kicked in unless subtitles were selected.

I would normally just have to select the standard DTS 5.1/6.1 audio track and they would play fine. Now they won’t work at all and instantly stop playing after a couple seconds. The only way I can get them to play is by disabling either direct play or direct stream.

I’ve tried reverting back my server version which did not help. I’m at a loss as to why this is suddenly a problem and it’s extremely frustrating to have to change one of those settings each time before watching.

Odd… I have the same configuration (MKV containers with video/audio from Blu-Ray, audio in DTS-HD MA, Roku Ultra player) and it’s working fine.

What do you have the audio settings in the Roku set to? In the Audio area for the HDMI output you can either select ‘auto’ or specific audio formats.

I’ve had it set to auto and DD +, DTS and it’s made no difference.

It’s strange how random it is with what plays. The Angry Birds Movie will not play with DTS-HD MA 7.1, DTS 5.1 or even AC3 5.1. It will play with the AC3 Stereo or if I disable direct play or direct stream. This played before with DTS 5.1.

But then Despicable Me 2 plays just fine with DTS-D MA 5.1, DTS 5.1 etc. Even Despicable Me 3 plays fine with DTS-HD MA 7.1.

99% played fine a couple months ago with the occasional DTS-HD MA track causing issues. I chalked it up to Roku not fully supporting DTS HD as various forums posts seem to claim or the movie needed subtitles turned on for alien languages/translations like the new Planet of the Apes movies.

Media server is a dedicated Windows 10 system connected via hardline to the router. Roku is in the next room connected via 5ghz WiFi.

So no one else?

So does Plex ever actually read topics and try to help?

Maybe this is an easier question - can anyone recommend a good alternative to Roku and Plex? I’ve already cancelled Plex Pass as I refuse to support any company that doesn’t help its customer base.
