Hi everyone. Long story short, I have set up an Optimized Version profile for recently aired TV episodes. The plan is to rsync that up to a Plex instance I have running on a VPS server, to use as a backup if my local Plex goes down or for remote users incase my internet is down, or my 10mbps upload gets congested.
Anyway, I’ve got the remote instance set up and working like I want, but the problem I’m running into is how Plex is transcoding my existing files for “Optimized Versions”. 99% of my video content is .mkv files, generally 720p hdtv, webdl, or bluray rips…and in some cases, 1080p. The Optimized Version profile I built was for “Universal TV” at 2mbps. Plex is converting these to mp4 containers, which don’t seem to play on either of my Vizio TV’s or either of my sister’s TV (remote users).
Oddly, when I try to play something locally that has an Optimized Version available, it defaults to that Optimized Version instead of playing the original file, even though my Plex Vizio app is set to play original when possible. Why does the Plex app default to that lower quality optimized version, and how can I have it default to the higher version?
Do my questions make sense? To recap, I want my Optimized Versions to be anything other than MP4 (preferably MKV), so is this possible? Also, how can I have a Plex App (specifically my Vizio TV App) default to play the original file, instead of one of the Optimized Versions?
