Also would be nice to see the channel or channels when clicking on an item.

Program Guide UI - needs a channel vs time table like most cable and sat tv providers use. Right now it is more Netflix like.

Program Guide UI and libraries… Need to have channel listed with the recording. No channel seems to be associated so I cant figure out where the recording came from (troubleshooting)

Program guide showing old info - I removed a number of channels, and they are still showing up in the guide. How do we clear out info for deselected channels?

I’ve had a TiVo since the Series 1 (Phillips HDR 212 circa 1999) and the program guide layout, from day one has been a pleasure. Fifteen years of Tivo and now to switch to Plex’s (albeit Beta) program guide, that’s a HARD SELL. I LOVE PLEX and I am WATCHING this DVR release closely. I REALLY DO WANT TO CUT as much as I can from my TWC cable bill but in order to retire the following…

  • 2 Tivo Premieres (Dual tuners) - $14.99 & $12.99 p/month

  • 1 Tivo Roamio (Quad Tuner) - $12.99 p/month

  • 1 Tivo Mini (Steals tuner from 1 Premiere)

  • SlingBox 350 & SlingBox M2

    • I hate Sling but I find them necessary because I travel constantly for work and can’t stand hotel cable!!
  • TWC Cable Cards (TWC Cincinnati only charges $2.50 per card ($7.50 total) and $0.00 for tuning adapters))

  • TOTAL MONTHLY before ACTUAL CABLE BILL $48.47

…these are things I need (REALLY WANT) to see in Plex DVR functionality in order to make the switch:

  1. Tivo LIKE program guide and program guide options
  2. LIVE STREAMING Television (EVEN OVER THE AIR would be GREAT TO START!)
    • Record and the stream isn’t NECESSARILY a deal breaker but It’s CLOSE
  3. Silicon Dust DVR with GREATER NUMBER of TUNERS.
    • Right now, with my TiVo’s I have the ability to record up to 8 different programs simultaneously.
    • I think a QUAD tuner is an ABSOLUTE MUST for NEAR FUTURE
    • SIX TUNERS should be AVAILABLE by mid-2017.
      • Cable does 6 (albeit poorly)
      • Satellite does 6 (albeit poorly)
  4. Silicon Dust DVR with OTA and CABLE functionality!!!

Even though I don’t see everything I WANT yet I’ll probably HAVE TO order a HomeRun and give this a try.

PLEX, PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK and PLEASE continue to improve and take our suggestions!

Patents surely are a complicated thing. We have noted this feature request to adjust the UI and will look into doing what we can. Recently we demoed Plex DVR at the CEDIA trade show in Dallas and the current UI was well received. Regardless, feedback noted  Thank you.

well… the current UI would not pass the wife test.
For cable TV scheduling she is going to expect to see the same as WMC, and the cable box. She will get mad at me if I try to get he to use it as it is

I didn’t really like the UI at first but I have grown somewhat accustomed to it now. However, yesterday another poster pointed out that you can view the program guide by channels and that pulls up all of that days shows in time order. I liked that idea a lot. For me, what would make that view even better (barring a grid style guide) is if the posters were in landscape (or thumbnail) format instead of poster size and the text beneath the poster was larger (the text for the time).

I would love to see a filter option to just show HD content in the program guide.

@dsabine

The good news is that six and probably nine channels are possible now, if your system can handle it. These six programs are using 60% of my file server’s CPU.

Agree that the current guide does not pass the WAF test. It would not be used in its current form by anyone but me (and then only out of necessity). The biggest compliant I have about the current guide is the navigation. You spend a few minutes in there looking around, see something that looks interesting, click in to it to see the description, then you are stuck. There is no way back to where you clicked in. If you use the back navigation icon in the UI it takes you back to a fresh presentation of the guide back at the top, not where you left off in the guide.

I generally open interesting items in new tabs (middle-click, or right-click and then “open in new tab”). Perhaps not a complete solution, but it does mean you don’t have to lose your place.

Keep in mind that there is a software patent on the traditional grid guide, and my understanding is that the patent holder’s licensing terms are pretty onerous. Silicon Dust opted not to license for the HDHomeRun DVR due to the cost/restrictions, as well as the apparently hostile attitude of company.

nVidia Shield owners can use “Live TV” app, which gives an awesome GUI TV Guide style interface. Can we get that for Plex? It’s free - so it must not be using any patents/royalties…

I also would like to see a more traditional program guide if possible so that it shows the channel and then upcoming shows in a grid. If not possible it would be nice to be able to select a channel and see what shows are upcoming displayed in a list by time (not really a grid - just a list of times and show names for that channel). This would be especially helpful because the Plex DVR Program Guide cannot find the 89th Academy Awards - it isn’t listed anywhere but the “Academy Awards After Party” show on the same channel is listed in the guide. If you select a channel you should be able to find the time slot for that particular show and set it to record.

Plex DVR is amazing and the program guide plus not showing what channel a show is recording on are really the only two odd thing that I’ve found so far (although we probably all would like to have Live TV through Plex if that becomes available in the future). I guess another feature that might help with missing shows in the program guide is maybe the ability to manually add a recording schedule - enter name of show and times it should record.

Thanks to everyone who are working on Plex!

Well, it’s free for Android TV users. I’m pretty sure Google is footing the bill on that. They’re actually building in their own DVR capabilities using the HDHomerun, similar to Plex. Drawback is that recordings are only accessible on the device that made them, only using the Live Channels app. I’m guessing this is in anticipation of getting DRM clearances for copy-protected channels.

For companies that don’t have deep pockets, or enough of a revenue stream to pay the patent holder, the only option is to try to innovate a new guide UI.

Another vote here for the channel vs time table (traditional). I can sort the given type of view mentally when I’m looking for something specific, like on netflix, but for scheduled shows, I’m firmly entrenched in the old guide style in a table.

I just wanted to add support for this basic request. Plex DVR is working great with my HDHOMERUN Extend, Synology 416Play. The “Recording Schedule - Calendar View” interface is working well as you can see what you have programmed to record each day.

However, the “Programing Guide” page is not working well at all. It needs a date/time/channel grid or table. The endless list of programs does not suffice. Even if you could just initially use this grid with only primetime shows, perhaps 7pm to 11pm it would be a major improvement. Please have a look at the “Channels” iOS app. They have a much smaller software team and they have a grid “Guide View”. Surely, the Plex DVR team can rise to this challenge.

This ideally is the most efficient for how I would use the plex programming guide even more so than the original WMC example I started this post with. The following image is the MY MC app that someone created to control WMC. As you can see it has all the channels listed by hour along with the shows outlined. This is the fastest way for me to see what is coming on and allows me to quickly see what I may want to record. The key features that I see in this app are:

  1. Ability to see all channels and all shows by day/hour. Granted, if you have more channels than what can be shown on a single screen, you would have to scroll up/down.
  2. Allows you to advance forward and back by hour(s) and by day(s) with the shortcuts at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Has a “Now” button to quickly get back to the current broadcasting shows in case you do advance the time/day.
  4. Allows to select a show on the grid, and a 2nd window automatically pops up which allows me to then either select the ability to Record the Show, or record the series (see 2nd picture).
  5. Shows on the same programming guide what shows you have schedule to be recorded so you don’t have to go to a separate screen as plex currently requires. The recording symbol on the programming guide shows up as a single red dot when you are recording a single episode, or multiple red dots partially overlapping like shown on the programming guide below when you have programmed it to record the series automatically for all shows (in my use case, it has the ability to record only all NEW shows in a series, so when there are repeats, it does not record those unless I setup the setting to do that).
  6. What MY MC does NOT have on the programming guide which I would even more useful is some indication of which shows are NEW like the TV Guide app does (see 3rd picture below). MY MC does tell you if it is a new show or a repeat, but you have to select the show to open up the 2nd screen as shown on the 2nd image to tell that. Ideally, this would be on the programming guide without having to open up each episode to check.

I would like to add my support for this. i wanted to record a show that is on tonight and it took me 10 minutes to figure out how to find the show to setup the recording. I didn’t know the name for sure but I knew the channel. This was way too hard.
