Question for linux experts upgrading versions of linux

Server Version#: debian 12
Player Version#: latest stable

This is a pretty simple question for those who are seasoned veterans for a noob who’s about to take the plunge, and I’m not asking for instructions, just asking about your experience.

how does one upgrade from one major (LTS, i guess, debian 12 for example), to a new version of debian (13 for example, or any major release of linux)?..

so, if you’re running a debian 12 headless PMS server, and debian 13 comes out and in time you decide to do the upgrade, is it as simple as running “aptget update && upgrade”, and everything on the server is updated? or do you have to do a full-on wipe and reinstall all of PMS after the new version of debian (or whatever you use) is done?

You can do an in-place upgrade, though it’s recommended to have a backup of your setup.
