Hmm… I beg to differ…
This particular example I have:Orphan Black, 1080, 5.1 Codec HEVC
PMS 1.0.0.2261
Rasplex 1.6.1 on an RPi2
Out of the box settings, no force transcode:
Hardly any sound, stuttering video.
Force transcode:
Perfect sound and video.
As you can see in the first image, it’s direct play from PMS.
This wasn’t the behavior prior to RasPlex 1.6.1.
// T
Default setting in 1.6.1 is suppose to limit direct-play up to 720p (possibly a bug), for next release we have added a preference option to limit direct-play of HEVC.
looking forward to the next version
@Old-T mind sharing the XML Data for your Orphan Black, 1080, 5.1 Codec HEVC video? PM or link.
I have not been able to direct-play 1080p hevc videos on RPi2 using 1.6.1. There was a typo in 1.6.0 that was fixed in 1.6.1 to prevent hevc videos larger then 720p from direct-playing.

Stop the presses!
My bad, I didn’t have 1.6.1 but 1.6.0.
Upgrading to the latest version gave the message “Resolution 1920*1080 to large. Transcoding.” (Yes, there’s a typo in the message)
Apologies!
Raspberry Pi has no HW acceleration for HEVC. At all.
People who say “it supports HEVC 720p” and so forth are mistaken. They are referring to a very narrow range of videos which happen to play using software decoding due to low bitrate or weak encoding settings. If you were to stray slightly above in complexity, they would stutter.
Right now the software decoding capability is work-in-progess and the capabilities are entirely undefined. Nobody can say with confidence “it plays HEVC Main Profile, Tier X, Level Y”.
Therefore direct-play of HEVC videos should be entirely disabled.
Starting with RasPlex 1.6.2 there is a preference option to control up to what resolution HEVC files will direct-play, it defaults to 720p and can be used to completely disable direct-play of HEVC files.
