Raw DVD or Compressed Blu-ray

It’d be boasting to call myself a novice at video encoding so I’m looking for the Plex for Dummies response.

For DVDs, I use MakeMKV to produce files that are 3-6GB in size and this process takes around 15-30 mins per DVD. For Blu-rays, MakeMKV produces files that are much larger at ~30GB and takes about the length of the movie. I can’t afford to store files this large so I then use Handbrake to compress these down to files similar in size to a DVD, but this process takes maybe twice the length of the movie. So a 2 hour DVD would take me 30 mins while a 2 hour Blu-ray would take me around 6 hours.

So my question is, if I’m converting Blu-ray files to something similar in size to a DVD, am I just going through a lot of extra work when I could just rip the raw DVD and be done with it? Is there an advantage to rip/compress a Blu-ray over ripping a raw DVD?

Compressed-down BluRay rips are superior in quality to raw DVD rips. So the BluRay is usually to be preferred.

Unless the BluRay just has a scaled-up [interpolated] version of the DVD picture on it.
But even then the picture is no longer interlaced and is not stored with non-square pixel dimensions (anamorphic). Both is problematic on some client types.
With a bit of experience in ripping, you will learn to recognize this by eye.
