Plex has a feature called Recommendations, which seems rather limited currently to me… I imagine a lot of Plex users would love to engage with their Friends through this feature by “recommending” or “suggesting” content. Currently, I’m not able to discover where I can even use this feature; although, I do see a “Recommended” queue… This is besides the point… I’d like to discuss some enhancements for this feature that I think would be really valuable.
Here are some enhancement ideas that I think would be a great direction to take:
- I’d really love to be able to recommend / suggest content ranging from a movie, tv series, album, song, even photos or home videos. Ideally, any content available in the Libraries should be shareable with Friends. All types of content should be supported. This should also be baked into the view of any content item, so a user can easily “recommend” content without any pre-conditions or requirements.
- Sharing will likely have some permission implications, as perhaps a user desires to share content that is either from a particular library that isn’t already “shared,” or maybe it’s caught by some “restrictions.” Ideally, a user should be allowed to share specific content regardless of the user-level permissions, thus overriding any previous restrictions or library shares.
- The next layer to this would be to permit plex users (perhaps even offering it as a premium feature) to publicly share content with anyone who “has the link.” The idea here is maybe a user would like to share some content with someone who doesn’t quite have a Plex account yet or hasn’t been added as a Friend. If Plex then requires them to make an account or sign-in upon accessing the link, I think that would be acceptable. All of these types of “shares” will need to have some way to manage, to remove previously shared links, etc.
What do we think? Perhaps this is already the vision for this feature and I’ve just missed something, but this would be awesome.
