Recommended Handbrake Settings

Yep. :)

drinehart - why would streaming from the web work then?  I can flip my Roku over to the TED channel (or Comedy Central, etc) and stream without any issues - no pixelation, no choppy audio, nothing.  Same wireless connection.  I'm willing to concede that it's my wireless connection if I saw other channels doing this also.  Is there a way I can test my bandwidth from the Roku?

As others have said... something streamed over the web is using a really really low bitrate and really aren't comparable to local ripped content.

What sander1 says +1, at least about upconversion.

Sounds like you 'upconverted' using Handbrake.

TBH, I've never tried that before, and I'm betting 120minutes x RF19 of 480p=>720p = horrible low video bitrate = bad blocky frames.

If you play the files using VLC or other 'play any format' media player, I'd bet they'd look as bad.

*** JamminR goes off to convert 10 minutes of dvd 480p up to 720p using Handbrake, just to see the carnage.

EDIT-

Well I just converted 20min of DVD Pirates of the Caribb to 720p.

Using RF18.5 (my personal favorite starting point for DVD), it came out to an average bitrate of video 1276kbps + audio of 384kbps)

Was worth a shot. (That's not overly high)

My suggestions)

1) Get mediainfo - linked from the destructo's instructions page. Use it to load the file, switch to text view, copy/paste here in a "code" block.

We'll most likely be able to see any oddities in the file if it's a bitrate/resolution/just off for transcoding

2) Make sure you're following his instructions exactly (for either BluRay if you have bluray, or dvd if your source is dvd).

Be patient...we swear it works and is beautiful in majority of cases if you're converting your own stuff.

Plex made my Roku's many times better.

Handbrake doesn't have the ability to upscale video through the gui. You'd need to use something like Ripbot or use the command line encoding in Handbrake to override it's settings.

Apparently, the nightly build version that I use does. :) I simply typed in the 1280 width and it adjusted accordingly.
Now, that didn't make the pores of Johnny Depp's face any more detailed from the DVD Pirates I used to sample of course (and was actually, more 'fuzzy'), but, it did indeed was a 1280x(I forget the crop #) resolution.

On Mac or Windows? I update my nightly build every day so maybe that was available in an older build you're still using? When I type in any value larger than the original it just changes it right back. It would be pointless to upscale with software anyway since any of the proprietary hardware upscaling is going to do a significantly better job.

Windows, and alas, you're right. It does (now) set the number back.

I no longer have the build version it was to go back and see if perhaps the 'size check' was wonky in one of the nightlys.

(Nor the vid file for confirmation...it was a quick 10 minute sample of Pirates of the Carribean, I simply deleted it)

I really only update my Handbrake "nightly" once every few weeks, and two main reasons I even use nightly is due to 1) the foreign audio scan that will burn to video from bluray, and 2) in hopes the OpenCL will be included as an option in the GUI to see if it would decrease encode time

Saw an article few months back that compared 2-3 encoders, all but Handbrake were commercial products, had OpenCL, and, though the encoders would encode 10-20% quicker, Handbrake quality still came out on top.

Yeah sometimes weird things get put in nightly builds then disappear a couple builds later. Or something gets taken out then put back in... I never know if it's a mistake or they are just trying things. The Foreign Audio search is the reason I use it. It's such an amazing feature. I don't even worry about subs anymore. I just turn that on for every encode and it hasn't missed one yet.

This link is now unfortunately just a fishing redirector. Don’t click… unless you would like to install some new and amazing malware

Might try that one - the yt link I previously gave used to go to that one.
It’s got updated for Handbrake 1.0+

Oh, one more thing - though the site ā€˜aimed’ at making sure Roku can direct play any stream following the site’s instructions, the author gives good overall advice on ensuring the content can direct play on just about any device, not just Roku.
