Hi,
Tip for those chasing a ‘server offline’ issue when streaming from remote in DNSSEC enabled environments, as I have faced this issue in the past few weeks and found a workaround.
The plex.direct domain does not have valid DNSSEC record, as can be seen on plex.direct | DNSViz
When you have DNSSEC validation in your DNS resolver chain, this will lead to “server offline” when trying to connect remotely.
Possible workarounds:
- crude: do not use DNSSEC enabled upstream resolvers
- tailored when using a caching DNS resolver like dnsmasq/pihole/…: in the configuration have the domain plex.direct be resolved by a different resolver which fixes the issue.
At the moment of writing, Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 fixes the DNSSEC for plex.direct to ‘INSCURE’ which allows resolving.
For dnsmasq this requires putting the following line in the dnsmasq.conf:
server=/plex.direct/1.1.1.1
And I hope plex could have the DNSSEC chain fixed in the longer term.
