From what I read if you’re not using the new Plex Experience apps, that it doesn’t kick in. However, one can assume that at some point the old apps will no longer work and you’ll be forced to the new apps.

See…my setup still has plugins and things like Comic Reader that still work flawlessly. I have avoided updates for years because i don’t want to lose access to them. The new apps, layouts and features are 99% not for me. I realize my pass will keep me straight, but like a lot of other people here, we wouldn’t be here if remote streaming had cost money from the offset. Thats why we used plex in the old days. I’m not feeling the current direction of the company.
“ LOS ANGELES, Jan. 4, 2023 /PRNewswire/ – Plex, a global streaming media platform, grew its monthly active users (MAU) to 16 million with billions of minutes watched and nearly tripled its annual ad revenue thanks to an extensive year of innovation.”
“ backed by Intercap and Kleiner Perkins.”
Tripling revenue isn’t enough for the greedy billionaires.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
Absolutely ■■■■■■■ ridiculous. Will be switching if this isn’t walked back. Or at least if direct connections are exempt. I haven’t used relays in years.
Doubtful it will be walked back - I don’t think its the cost of the relays (as that should be minimal), just that Plex needs another reliable income stream.
That’s what the price bump is for.
I already paid for 4 lifetime accounts, I guess I should buy a 5th since the price is going up just in case. ![]()
I anticipated the price increase. Either they increase, or they don’t and have to shut down. They’re a business after all.
I think it’s nice that plex is giving 6 weeks before it going into effect.
Could we please get clarification on what “remote” means from an authoritative source?
It seems to me that Tailscale possibly makes this change largely redundant, as do VPNs. Although it’s unclear whether that’s actually the case. Currently I can access my Plex server over Tailscale from remote networks despite the “remote access” page saying the server is inaccessible, so one might infer that that isn’t being counted as “remote” access. It could be remote but they could also be on the same local LAN and in both cases have the same CIDR range. Not sure if there’s any way for Plex itself to determine this. So I suppose it might just decide that anything not on the same CIDR range as the primary network interface is “remote”, which would seem to conflict with the current behaviour but if their goal is raising revenue might be deemed practical from their point of view.
Anyway TL;DR please clarify ![]()
Wow, WTF?? You just publicly posted PI in violation of Plex’s privacy policy.
■■■■ move number two today.
I’ll save you the effort, I registered in 2015, and lived through the absolute ■■■■ software releases back then. And haven’t streamed a thing off my plex sever in a year and a half.
I bet they don’t want users to use Tailscale, just for those reasons…
Another concern I have is just due to the ambiguity of who needs a Streaming Pass and who doesn’t, how many older non-technical folks are going to be purchasing one, even when they don’t need it? I bet it’s a fairly significant number.
Couldn’t care less whether they want it or not, I want to understand what they mean by “remote”. It’s currently ambiguous when you can put both the client and server on the same virtual network.
WTF is going on at plex. First the plans of removing “Watch together” and not this. Why are you guys so greedy and provide nothing special. What costs are you talking about regarding remote streaming. Do you thing we are stupid? Remote streaming costs you nothing. And plex is in no way easier to set up than jellyfin. Installing jellyfin takes a few minutes and no complicated setup is required.
This is just greed and you are just hoping that people will pay for it.
The comments of the mods and employees are also something else in this thread.
Well plex was nice and was getting shittier over time.
did they share MORE of MY private information, or was this Yours? or someone elses? looks like they deleted that post…
The more I think about it the more it seems like this is effectively unenforceable and largely just a tax on people who are less capable with server admin. I can just stick nginx in front of plex and then all connections to it are “local”.. ![]()
Not entirely sure I understand this change. What if I already paid the one time unlock fee for mobile devices, will I still be able to remotely access through my phone once the Plex experience takes effect?
They’ve already confirmed that this won’t work. You could however put your server in a VPN to ‘trick’ Plex and connect to it when watching remotely as if you were in the LAN.
The messaging here from Plex Staff and Forum Mods has been pretty terrible. You’ve already rewritten portions of your blog post. You fail to mention what features, such as Watch Together, will be removed with the price hike.
More concerning though, will Plex be getting rid of this Dane22 employee that is going through our personal information and leaking things to try and shame users? I am not comfortable using a service from a company that has employees acting like this or that promotes this behavior.
