Elephant in the room. Lifetime Plex Pass

Can we just call this what it is? Un obtainable. It’s clear as day greed, the company doesn’t want this to exist anymore that’s why the cost is what it is. I’ve used Plex for years and have lifetime, but all this extra crap we don’t need. We run our own servers and the value of any content you might add is meaningless. You don’t want us self hosting we get your message loud and clear.

Edit 1:

I think it boils down to them not making ad revenue from your hosted content. So the $750 is like a front charge for allowing your users to umbrella under you.

Edit 2:

In all likelihood they’ll make it steep to discourage sale then have an occasional sale to make people panic buy and the price will be more then what it is currently at the time of writing this. Seems scummy but that’s where I’ll put my chips for what will happen.

Just saying as a customer I don’t appreciate being gaslit it’s insulting.

I know your tone deaf, but read some Reddit comments or here if you want to see how your community feels about this.

At some point I worry my lifetime license will no longer be valid because of a version change. Plex server 2 or some bullshit. I see it happen with great software that moves to subscriptions frequently. Or they will discontinue the Plex server completely.

Yeah its stupid. But nothing compared to Plex. Even jellyfin, although it has its advantages, has more disadvantages. I’m just gonna buy Lifetime now and forget about it. I’m curious if they are going to do geek week though.

Yeah I would never pay 750 for plex. It’s stupid, I agree. But if I can get it now for 250, and while it is still a good service, I am going to.

Smells like a desperate grab for cash more than anything. Nobody is going to pay $750 in the future, that’s f’ing insane! For that much money they better be adding a ton of new features to it!

Yep, they just want people to move to the subscription model - that way they can show recurring revenue on their financial statements.

The current price was steep but tolerable the new price is a statement to us.

Do you think they’re gonna get it in their head at some point that they need to change something? Or do you think this is really the last straw?

Plex from 10 years ago I’d be like…naaaa, never will happen.

Plex from the last 3 years. Yeah, totally going to happen.

They haven’t listened to their customers about the changes to the navigation of the new apps, not sure why they’d bother listening to us on anything else.

Yeah, I guess you’re right

What’s not changing:

  • All current Lifetime Plex Pass holders will continue to have access to all benefits and perks associated with a Plex Pass. (Nothing will change for you.)

  • Monthly & annual subscription pricing for Plex Pass and Remote Watch Pass will remain unchanged.

Except that’s short sighted because anything later down the road could change.

It would be great if this were true. If this were actually true, they would listen to the feedback from their customers and restore the old interface.

This kind of price increase is a giant middle finger to the customers who use your product and it has never worked out well for any company. If anything it makes me wonder about their long term viability.

They are absolutely floundering and every decision they’ve made recently shows it. Ridiculous price increases, layoffs, major feature cuts… There’s no way they are doing well.

My personal opinion is that Plex should have just stopped offering new Lifetime Pass subscriptions (after a cut-off date). There are ongoing development costs and, with the previous/current pricing, folks with a Lifetime Pass were no longer contributing to that after anywhere from 1.5-6 years (depending on the price at which they purchased it).

Honestly at $750, I doubt they’re going to get very many new Lifetime Pass subs. In today’s economy that’s a pretty high hurdle for a lot of people.

My point exactly. So just don’t offer it any longer. For folks who continue to subscribe monthly or yearly, they have ongoing revenue. For folks who choose to take advantage of the cut-off date for the current pricing, they get some immediate revenue. For folks who don’t find value in paying for Plex, nothing changes.

Because Plex is a live authentication service.
Live services can’t exist on onetime purchases, their support costs are ongoing, the fee is onetime. It’s a pyramid scheme. Pyramid schemes flop.
This is a reality of live service.
