Remove the on screen display while paused

I watch a lot of subtitled shows. Sometimes the subtitles go by so fast that I can’t read them in time. I would pause the show, but the onscreen display pops up when it’s paused blocking the subtitles. It is very annoying. Is there anyway to disable this?
