Renaming youth hockey game videos

I tape my son’s youth hockey games and I would like to share them with his coaches and other parents. Each game consists of about 90 short AVCHD files. I plan on combining the files and grouping them by period. After reading the how-to on renaming, I am still at a little bit of a loss on how to rename them so they can be played off of my Plex server.

A typical file name would be badgers_vs_foxes_20171017202052.mts. After combining them, it would result in three files like badgers_vs_foxes_20171017_pd1.mts (or would it be better to convert to .mkv? Would I lose resolution, etc.? Sorry for the aside), badgers_vs_foxes_20171017_pd2.mts, and badgers_vs_foxes_20171017_pd3.mts.

How do I go from there setting up the file structure after that? I figure the show would be Badger PeeWee Hockey. I would like the series to be 2017-2018 but I’m sure it should just be the year it was taped. I get a little iffy after that.

I apologize in advance for being new to Plex.

Naming is can be a pain sometimes…

First as far as converting I would recommend you do convert which will allow a greater user experience when viewing the recordings. You can maintain the same resolution for your videos but you can adjust the quality settings which determines the final output file size but that is a whole different conversation so if you need help with that we can discuss.

As far as naming I would suggest you create a “Others Video” library and setup the following file structure:
Mine starts in a folder called “lib” you can call it whatever you want…

I added “lib” as the root for the folder in Plex:

And this is what it looks like in the library:

And if you stack them by naming it part1, part2, part3 it will show up as a single item:

Hope that helps!
