I read in another forum that 10-bit HEVC hw decoding is disabled because Plex has no way of detecting whether the hardware supports it. Could we get an advanced setting to force enable this if we know we have hardware support? I have an i7 Kaby Lake and QSV def can decode 10-bit HEVC. Ideally it would transcode to 10-bit HEVC as well and preserve HDR metadata (since all recent iOS devices can play this back), but obviously that’s harder to implement. Tone-mapping (for streaming to non-HDR displays) would be great too but again, that’s harder. This really wasn’t a huge issue until recently, but over the past few months my library now has over 50 10-bit HEVC videos.
I second the request for tone-mapping of HDR content to non-HDR displays. This will quickly become a major request over the next year or so as households start having a mix of HDR and non-HDR displays.
I asked for the same thing in here months ago and got no reply at all. it’ll probably take a year or two for Plex to realise that this is something bigger than, say, Plex News.
It would be great if plex client could handle the tone mapping without needing the server to transcode…
