Reverse Proxy/FQDN vs Plex built-in remote access

Server Version#: 1.26.0.5715
Player Version#: N/A

I’d like to learn more about PLEX’s built-in remote access. Right now, I access my PLEX server remotely using a FQDN and reverse proxy, just as I do with all of my other services I want to forward face.

Someone recently argued that PLEX has some sort of QoS / throttle management which I’m not able to take advantage of the way I have I have mine setup. Can someone either explain it to me or point to a link regarding the ins and outs of this?

The reason I use a reverse proxy is because I don’t like forwarding ports to specific services. I much prefer having all of my services behind a web server and having it do the work.

Can anyone make a case for or against both how I’m doing it now, as well as doing it using the built-in remote access?

Thanks!

There is neither a speed, nor a security advantage by doing it this way.

To do it the default Plex way, establish a port forwarding from the public network interface of your gateway to port 32400 of your server machine. Then inform Plex about the public port number of the port forwarding rule.

Thanks! I’ll just set it up that way then, and not worry about it.
