Searching Music by Artist and NOT Album Artist

I am struggling to figure out how to search/find tracks by specific artists.

I have a lot of “Compilation” albums. Notably, all of the Dwelling of Duels from each month.

They are structured like this:
The entire month is in a single album which has Album Artist = 'Dwelling of Duels'
Each track has Artist = 'That Artist'

Here’s an example in MusicBrainz: Release “Dwelling of Duels 2005-05: Konami Games Month” by Dwelling of Duels - MusicBrainz

The problem is that there are a lot of artists who have contributed to different Dwelling of Duels months over the years. For example, the First track in this Album is by the artist “goat”, and I know that they have many other tracks in my library.

…but if I try to search by Artist for “goat”, I don’t get anything.

If I view my Music Library by Artist, no artist with the name “goat” shows up at all.

I even tried to do an “Advanced Filter” by “Artist Title” and nothing shows up…

When I listen to the track on Plex itself or on Plexamp, it does show the artist’s name correctly and not “Dwelling of Duels” but I can’t use “Go to Artist” to find goat - It only shows “Dwelling of Duels” or whatever when I use it…

What can I do?

If you simply search “goat” in Plex web or plexamp it should return tracks with that artist.

Pic added of search for “fantompower” (only appears on various artists albums in my library)

Another option in Plex web or plexamp is to filter library - tracks - track name - contains - goat.

Pic added of filtering track name by fantompower (only appears on various artists albums in my library)…

When searching by artist, viewing library by artist or filtering by artist Plex is actually using “album artist” so it will not return any results if they only appear on various artists albums.

Yes, I agree that it should do this, but it does not.

What am I doing wrong?

Optimize your server’s database.

Filtering by “Track Title” does work however, so at least there’s that… I just did not expect that would be the way to do it.

Optimize your server’s database.

I am about 80% sure this was already done recently, I just migrated everything from my windows machine to a new Linux server and optimized after everything was added, but I will try it again just to be sure.

I will update with the results.

Well I guess that was it (and I expected the process to take much longer - since I have 35k+ tracks in my Library but it only took ~30s)

Thanks!

Let it perform automatically, during the server maintenance period.
So you won’t have to think about it.

…that is already enabled… and I’m sure I manually optimized as part of the ‘switch to Linux’ process which I did about a month ago, after all the media files had been moved… so I’m not sure why it only worked this time.

I’ll have to try and keep an eye on it.

Yes I agree it’s not intuitive - Would be good if they could add a filter called “track artist” as it would be a bit more obvious maybe
