Server with 6+ 10 Tb Hard Drives Nas or Stand Alone

Server Version#: Installing new computer

Just got done building my server for plex and school.
I9 9900k
Ram 64 Gig
6 10 tb WD Red 5400

Should I Raid (Software/Hardware) or keep standalone. Worried about redoing my computer os as I image when it messes up. Ideas thoughts…

My opinion is avoid a raid at all costs. Most raids have the risk of losing everything if the device they are running on fails.

I recommend using StableBit’s Drivepool to pool the drives with either a solid backup strategy or using Drivepool’s duplication feature or, best, both.

Most raids and Drivepool are NOT backup solutions so you need a separate backup solution.

Drivepool has the advantage of storing all files in Windows native format so should ever need to you can just copy the files from a Drivepool partition right to another drive or partition and if the computer it is running on fails all you need to do is move the drives to another computer and install Drivepool and it will recognize the existing pool and you are good to go.

There are many other advantages of Drivepool but you can read them yourself on Stablebit.

I’m incline to agree with @Elijah_Baley on this one. This is coming from experience after my RAID failed, then the rebuild failed twice!! Your best bet is to stand alone each drive. No raid.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to use StableBit’s Drivepool(though I would if I could) because it only works with drives physically connected to the machine. No NAS support.

But no matter the option you use… Don’t forget about the backup either local, off site, or online… You might need it someday…

Yep. That is a limitation and a primary reason I also avoid a true NAS. I run a Windows computer with a number of external drives from 3tb to 10tb connected via USB totaling about 70tb.

On more thing is I have found that the secret to reliability with my setup is cooling. I have a cheap box fan blowing across the whole setup and I am now up to nearly three years without even a glitch. I do NOT rely on internal cooling of my server computer or my external drives.
