I currently have a Mac Mini (running the Plex Media Server) connected to a RAID which contains all my movies, music and TV shows. This gets sent to all the Rokus in the house wirelessly. I’d like to do the same with the OTA TV signals that I now know that I can pick up.
The problem I am trying to get past is the fact that the Homerun Tuners needed require an ethernet connection. Which I do not have where my Mac is. My whole house is wireless. So does that mean I am just SOL? Until I can get ethernet run to my office?
Or am i completely misunderstanding the set up needed?
If you have ethernet somewhere in your house, you can plug your tuners in there, ideally it would be somewhere both ethernet and your antenna cable is reachable.
At a minimum, you most likely have some kind of ethernet where your internet modem is.
Otherwise, if you do not have any ethernet then yes you will need some kind of router or switch that you can plug your tuners into that is also part of the wireless network.
Ok. I was afraid of that. Yes, I can plug in the tuner to my router. But the router is in a closet in the center of my house. I’m not sure how well the antenna would work there.
I would recommend getting an attic antenna and running a coax down from attic to your closet then.
I recently have done the same to help stabilize my tuners signal, which in turn helps stabilize plex tv/dvr.
The tuners work great, but I probably need a more powerful box to run plex on, along with hopefully more plex back end optimization.
After having used a hdhomerun quad tuner with plex over the last ~3 weeks, I have had both an impressive and disappointed experience.
Just a thought. You could purchase a network switch and a Powerline Network Adapter kit. Put one of the Powerline Adapters connected to your router, the other plugged into switch by your Mac mini and HDHR device. This will allow the Mac mini and HDHR device to use Ethernet connections instead of WiFi and can see each other on the same switch so your Mac can record from the HDHR. Also allows the HDHR to be connected to your router through the switch so any wireless devices can stream Live TV.
