Sharing DVR & guide lineup with another household member

My husband has finally taken an interest in viewing TV/videos with Plex. He created a Plex account yesterday. But he cannot see the DVR guide or schedule under Live TV.

I also tried creating a managed account, but face the same problem.

How can this be fixed ?

Note that I’m a lifetime Plex pass member.

So, anyone ?

I can of course share my account with him, but I don’t understand why this should be needed. Why make it possible to share the stored libraries, but not the live TV tuner or DVR schedule ?

You need to invite them to your Plex home and then give them access to Live TV / DVR. I think this page explains it. https://support.plex.tv/articles/203815766-what-is-plex-home/

See “Inviting Marge” on this page: https://support.plex.tv/articles/204234313-example-plex-home-setup/

@OttoKerner,

Thanks for your response. I tried this workflow, but couldn’t get it to work

First, when choosing the libraries, I see this :

There are 2 libraries I don’t want to share. Neither has anything to do with TV or DVR, they are video files.

Once I get to the “restrictions” step, I don’t see “Live TV & DVR Access” listed at all.

This is what I see .

It seems that there should be a library for TV & DVR access, but there isn’t one, so it can’t be shared.

Note that my DVR recordings end up in the “TV Shows” library, and those are accessible and properly shared. But access to the TV tuner or schedule is not.

Then create one.

Only those recordings which in the EPG are classified as “episodic” (i.e. a series episode) will end up in that library.
All non-episodic programmes require a “Movies”-type library to get recorded.

You should see the settings after you have invited the account into your Plex Home (and this invitation was accepted).

Thanks. Actually, it isn’t possible to create a library for live TV and DVR.

The problem turned out to be that one needs to go back to edit the new user to grant access. It is not possible to do so when creating the user. Only libraries can be shared at that time. That is very confusing, and a source of much frustration.

It took me a while to figure out the right place to add that permission. It is different in the apps and web site. And my vision isn’t what it used to be. I miss many visual cues, unfortunately. The UI really could stand to be made more consistent.

Could you elaborate a bit?

Of course.

Under settings / Manage / Libraries / Add libraries, the first step is to select one of :

Movies
TV shows
Music
Photos
Other videos

The second step is to select a folder. It’s not possible to select Live TV tuner, or DVR schedule. Those are managed somewhere else.

IMO, it would be simpler if one could encapsulate these into a library, and then be able to grant access to it like other media, as opposed to the current way of doing it.

This is not how it’s done.

You create a library of the type “TV Shows”.
You create another library of the type “Movies”.
Point them each to an individual, empty folder that is not inside any other folder that has already been added to a Plex library.
Grant your user access permission to both these libraries.
Grant your user access to the Live TV and DVR feature.
Now the user can schedule recordings of both “episodic” and “one-off” programmes. If the user has access to several libraries of a certain type, the target library for the recording can be selected in the recording schedule dialog of each recording.

Yes, I realize that now. My problem was with this step :

Grant your user access to the Live TV and DVR feature.

When I go to “Plex home” and click “Invite user”, I’m first asked to choose the libraries to share with the user.

I’m then asked about content restrictions. And that’s it.

I am not asked for the opportunity to grant access to Live TV & DVR to the user at this point.

I have to wait until the invite is accepted, then dig through the permissions for the user, then find the option to share Live TV & DVR.

This is an underwhelming user experience. I don’t understand why the ability to share the Live TV & DVR is delayed until after the invite is accepted. The experience should be consistent, and sharing should be be allowed upfront, at the time of the invite - same as with the libraries.
