Should I switch to using the 2019 shield as my server?

I am currently using a QNAP TS-853BU (4 core Celeron 8GB RAM) as my nas and plex media server. For the most part, I rely on either a shield or an xbox one for playback. I have 1 xbox 1x in the house and 1 series X. Because the xbox player was so broken for a long time with UHD and audio, I used the Shield for playing back content.

The NAS isn’t a powerhouse by any means, but for the most part I don’t transcode, but I’m just wondering for the times that I do need to transcode, is it worth the effort to run PMS on the 2019 shield pro? I’m assuming it could probably handle UHD better? I am trying to only store UHD copies with Dolby true hd or DTS-X. I stopped grabbing multiple audio versions, so if there is a client that can’t do HDR, I’m hoping transcoding can happen on the fly.

Thanks in advance

I can tell you that the Shield server cannot handle tone mapping a 4k remux, so if you want to store one best quality 4k HDR file an play it back on any device, the Shield isn’t the server you need.

The current production version of Plex Server on the current version Shield no longer supports hardware transcoding. It used to, but no longer does. There is no ETA for when this feature will be available again.
