I donât have any pictures of my setup, and itâs a WIP (as many of us can probably relate to), however:
The âheartâ consists of an HP Z800 with:
-2x Xeon X5677
-32GB DDR3 (8 4GB DDR3)
-3 240GB SSD (primary datastore)
-4 1TB HDD (my current storage pool)
The Z800 host OS is ESXi 6.0. It houses three VMâs that run 24/7.

-VM2 â my âgamingâ system

=This system also has a Radeon 6970 and a pair of USB ports attached via âpcipassthroughâ. I use a USB<->Cat5 extension, and RapidRun part #'s : 42419, 42422, 42405. These connect to a Dell 24" 16:10 monitor mounted on a wall in a corner of my living room. This is where I game / do âgeneralâ computing stuff

=This system has a dual port USB3 controller and an Intel 82801J1 6 port SATA HBA attached via âpcipassthroughâ.
=I use StableBit Drivepool for my storage pool. I wanted the functionality of a Drobo, but not the price of a drobo.
Other than my laptop, which sees hardly any use, there are no other computers in my house (that are put together / active â I need to get all that crap sold off!)
My livingroom TV is a 40" Samsung LCD TV. It has a Onkyo TX-SR507 receiver, two Polk R50âs for the front R/L, a Polk CS20 center, and two Cambridge Soundworks 6.5" in-wall speakers for the rear.
My bedroom TV is a 42" Vizio LCD TV. I have another Onkyo receiver (and older model) with a couple Awia bookshelf speakers (came with a âbookshelf stereoâ, but the stereo part was stolen quite some time ago).
In the livingroom, Iâm currently using an Amazon FireTV Stick for Plex / Sling / Netflix, and I am not happy with it for Plex use. I want to switch to something like the Intel Compute Stick, but I canât find ANY info on how well it works for PHT, especially when it comes to passing DD/DTS along to my receiver.
In the bedroom, since that TV is rarely ever used (usually for an hour, or so, each night while Iâm winding down for bed), I have a Chromecast. I moved the Chromecast in there because it can not handle 1080p content without overheating (which causes it to pause every few seconds, after a second (or two) of video playback). Since I only ever watch TV shows in there, and those are generally 720p, it fits that space perfectly.
I also occasionally stream to my Samsung Note 10.1 (2014 edition), or to my laptop, when Iâm traveling, but since I have a 400GB monthly bandwidth cap, and a tiny 5mbit upstream, I donât share the server with anyone.
Iâve upgraded my living room since Iâve moved to Delft. Still got the Samsung 40" TV, thinking of replacement in early 2016 though, perhaps someone got ideas?

Server setup right now is a HP DL580 G5, 4x 77xx Xeon, 128gb ram running esxi 6 and vcenter goodies. PMS VM is 8 cores and 16gb ram setup and Iâve streamed up to 8 or 9 devices in house plus 12 friends connected and never a stutter. Storage is a supermicro something 15x 2tb ZFS for about 22tb usable storage. Each has 4x 1gb ethernet lacp port channels through the cisco switch.
Living room is Samsung 65" plasma wired, kids room 55" samsung lcd. Have vizio 32" in the bedroom with firetv stick. Also have an older 720p projector on a pole behind the hot tub with another firetv stick and 4x bose powered outdoor speakers.
Just got permission from the wife to rebuild the garage into a proper mancave⊠so been amazoning and ebaying like crazy for a new projector, server rack, 4x 18" subs, bose in-wall x7 and Iâll repurposes the older rackmount white-box in the pic above as the player. Not the prettiest of pictures because i was trying to visualize how everything would fit before I started the project, but Iâve been yanking those shelves down over the last 2 weeks and insulating/drywalling the whole garage. Will have 2 arcades, server rack, pinball and an old 50âs coke machine converted to working beer fridge on the back wall with the 12-15
â wide screen above it (fun 12â garage ceilings). Also repurposing 3x older 40" tvâs with more firesticks for streaming live games while the projector shows redzone with a couple 22" monitors for scoreboards in the corners.
Really please ignore the mess. Itâs taken a year for me to get the wife to finally go through all of the boxes on those shelves weâve moved from house to house over the last 10yrs and now that almost all of them are empty those shelves are gone, server rack build in progress and there will be cabinet storage above the arcades that the projector will shine on. Donât really care thatâs itâs not movie theater quality because well, it is a garage and 90% of the watching on it will be a dozen or so guys screaming at football while sloshing beer all over the floor⊠soâŠ

2, 6 TB WD Black in RAID 0 (backup through crashplan), effective 10.9 TB of storage. (network is all CAT 6 and Gigabite wireless)
capable of serving up to 8 local and external connections

I donât have anything as fancy as some of your here. I guess mine would fit under a simple category.
My server is an AMD Athlon x4 black chip, 8gb DDR3 RAM, 2x3tb hard drives in RAID 1 for redundancy and a 500gb drive for the ubuntu system. Also has a BluRay drive for RIPing new movies. This is a dedicated PMS system. I also have the HDHomeRun DVR system integrated into my system as well for live TV.
16 Port TP-Link gigabit switch, Google Wifi Mesh wireless Network.
Still a work in progress as I have a 1U power distribution unit arriving tomorrow and a 1U shelf to place the server on as the Cabinet is about 1" too shallow fo me to be able to mount the server to the rails. I have been improving my server for at least the last 5 years.
This serves my Samsung 55" Smart TV, a couple fire sticks a few smart phones and computers, etc.
Edit - I got my rack shelf for the server to go on and cleaned it up a bit.
Well, I upgraded my server in November. I thought it would be years before I upgraded again⊠43 days. It took 43 days to start over.
First server (3 years 4 months) - 2012 Mac mini dual core i5 @ 2.3(4 cores total) / 8gb ram / OSX 10.10 with a drobo 5D and 5x 2TB drives (grew to a b810n with 6x 5TB drives and 2x 8tb drives
Second server (43 days) - upgraded mini to Dell T5500 dual CPU Xeon x5670 @ 2.93 (24 cores total) / 72gb ram / Win10
current setup - dell R910 quad cpu Xeon E7-4860 @ 2.27 (80 cores total) / 512gb ram / 16x 1.2tb 10k SAS drives raid5 / unRaid 6.4
An adaptec raid card is installed in the R910 and exits the case via 2x sff-8088 cables and goes to an HP 24port SAS expander in a custom Norco 4224 case housing 16x 3TB Sun SAS drives, 6x 5TB WD and 2x 8TB WD. Also have a 256gb SSD, 128gb SSD, and 64gb SSD for cache drives. Inside the NORCO (but obviously not connected to the 24 drives) is a core i5 4430 with 16gb ram and a radeon R9 270 connected to 6x 1TB 2.5" drives in a raid5 drive from the board and 24x 500gb 2.5" drives in a raid 6 driven off of 2x LSI 9650SE cards. I also still have the drobo b810n for drives that get upgraded in the future (old drives will be demoted to drobo). All running through a Dell 5324 GBe managed switch and housed in a Dell 42U fully enclosed rack.
Also have an HD Homerun Extends for OTA recording and live viewing
Total current raw storage: ~155TB / Usable storage: ~118TB

I did choose unraid over Xen and VSphere and proxmox because of the ease of use and native Plex docker. I love that the OS is modular and can switch to a new server without much fuss. I REALLY tried to like Xen, but I didnât like that I was limited to 32 cores per VM - and plex had to run in a VM - so I couldnât use all 80 cores for the main purpose I wanted. that coupled with the GOD AWFUL fight to do anything - nothing is simple or point and click - and I was just over it. Even to add new storage was an act of god and command line code that was 3 miles long.with plans to get a

Yes. sorry for the delayed reply.
With unRaid, Plex has access to all 80 cores - as does anything else running in a docker - or VM if you want. I have not stressed it yet, but with 5 transcodes (just the most my friends and family have done all at one time so far) I was only at 20-24% CPU.
I could add a decent NVidia card to the box to give me some hardware transcode, but so far it has not been an issue.
The other thing about unraid is that it can spread your data over all of your drives. So even if 6 or 8 people hit my server all at once, they are never going to hit the same file, and will be much less likely to even hit the same hard drive - giving me even more headroom for multiple streams.
I have almost completed this build - and just have a little troubleshooting left to do for the Hauppauge TV Tuner. It has taken a lot of time and trial and error, but the end result is incredible. ebay and craigslist have been very good to me lol.
I dunno how âalmost exactlyâ to mine you are doing. Here is where I wound up:
Unraid 6.5 running on Dell R910 - (finally got all 16x SAS drives in Dell to work. wound up buying an H200 and then needing to reformat the drives from 520 to 512⊠took forever.)
Adaptec card -> 2x 8087-8088 adapter card -> 2x 8088 cables -> 2x 8088-8087 Adapter card -> HP SAS expander (in a PCIe 1x-16x powered adapter (the ones used for mining) -> Norco BackPlanes
Computer inside Norco runs pfsense from the 64gb SSD I origianlly had as a cache drive in unRaid and has an additional 4 port Gbe card along with the onboard Gbe. The onboard NIC serves as Wan Port, the 4 port card is link aggregated to the dell switch. the EMC Storcenter and Dell are also both link aggregated (giving me 4Gb transfer between any of them. the Drobo is link aggregated as well, but it is not in use at the moment) - This computer also turns on the power to the hard drives and fans. Overkill for sure, but better to use the Norco to house the router than buy a whole other rackmount case and rig the power supply in the Norco.
I found a ton of rails and CMAâs and a rack monitor/keyboard for cheap, so I added that as well. Also am just starting to work on integrating my 8 camera home securityâŠ

RAM - 128gb eec ram (64gb is decacated go a virtual hard drive so I donât transcode to SSD or mechanical drives)

I share my server with a lot of people but every one is forced to transcode files down from there 1080p/4k format becuse where I live the max upload speed is 6mps. Downspeed is 120mpb. One day Iâd like to get it on a gigabit upload connection. I am a PC enthusiast and have been building them since I was 6, (now 23) I now how a masterâs degree in Computer science and networking. My personal build is as listed.

Hehe, I upgraded again. Still looks pretty much the same but I have now completely overhauled the system.
It is now running an AMD Ryzen 5 2400G Processor (4 Cores 8 Threads with 11 Vega Graphics Cores) on a Gigabyte AB350M-DS3H motherboard. 16 GGB DDR4 2400 Ram, an AMD RX 580 8GB video Card, 120 GB M.2 SSD for the system and the same 2x3TB RAID drives for the media. It is now running windows 10 because this server is now running Plex as well as a Steam server so I can stream video games to pretty much any device in my house as well.
I also have an HDHomeRun 2 Tuner box for the DVR function.
Q for Romneyfam. Which GPU do you have set as the default system GPU? The APU (Vega) or the RX580?
Iâm upgrading my A10-7890K with RX460 (single slot) to the Ryzen 5 2400G too⊠I was planning on making the Vega 11 the primary (in UEFI) to force itâs availability for Plex transcoding, and using the RX460 for transcoding my BD rips (AMD VCE - Aâs Video Converter).
What has been your experience with PMS transcoding with your AMD APU?
Jfreiman, currently I am using the discrete card only. I used the processor to rip some movies when I had it running Linux and it screamed, but wasnât even using the graphics side of the processor is to the Linux kernel limitations at that time. I havenât done enough looking yet to see about making the Apu the primary or secondary. I also havenât testing how many transcodes I can have going at once. I will have to stress test it soon.
