Simple Feature: Authorized Devices Note

When I add a device, I would like the ability to add a simple text note on the device (or change the device display name) so that I can tell who the device belongs to in case I want to shut it down in the future.

Example: I have a PS5 and my relative Paul has a PS5. I just want to be able to put a text note that says “Paul’s PS5” on the device so I know who owns what downt he road in my device list.

Authorized devices only shows your devices that you signed into at some point. Not your friends devices

So allow me to present this use case:

In my house where I have 3 Roku TV’s, they all show up the same and I’d like to be able to say “Guest Room TV” “MBR TV” etc.

You doing something in a way that is mostly typical of folks who break our terms of service when selling access to their server (I’m not saying you’re doing that) I would not suggest presenting as a use case.

I revised my use case, even though I dont’ sell access (never even considered it), nor do I allow unknowns on my server, I get your point.

I would just like a way to know what devices are what as I add them (friendly names).

If you name your Roku devices inside your Roku account they will show up as such in Plex. Same with Android devices and ALL devices. Including but not limited to Linux app using your machine name and Plexamp etc… so I’m not sure what the issue is here or what needs to be implemented but it already is do-able. Set the name on the device before signing into Plex.

BTW naming devices is NOT “mostly typical of folks who break our terms of service” when in-fact Plex already works this way. To say that is completely ridiculous.

Naming devices is not what I was referring to. He edited his post to provide a different use case.

In any way… the updated use case is already covered:
(a) many clients already support assigning a device name
(b) there’s an existing feature suggestion asking for an option to have that feature for all clients (e.g. browsers…).

I suggest you comment/vote in that 2nd thread if you’re missing the option on some of your device types. This will help avoid to distract or cannibalize votes.

I’ll go upvote that one. I sure don’t take credit for the idea… I stole it from every other streaming platform I’m on.
