When I add a device, I would like the ability to add a simple text note on the device (or change the device display name) so that I can tell who the device belongs to in case I want to shut it down in the future.
Example: I have a PS5 and my relative Paul has a PS5. I just want to be able to put a text note that says “Paul’s PS5” on the device so I know who owns what downt he road in my device list.
You doing something in a way that is mostly typical of folks who break our terms of service when selling access to their server (I’m not saying you’re doing that) I would not suggest presenting as a use case.
If you name your Roku devices inside your Roku account they will show up as such in Plex. Same with Android devices and ALL devices. Including but not limited to Linux app using your machine name and Plexamp etc… so I’m not sure what the issue is here or what needs to be implemented but it already is do-able. Set the name on the device before signing into Plex.
BTW naming devices is NOT “mostly typical of folks who break our terms of service” when in-fact Plex already works this way. To say that is completely ridiculous.
In any way… the updated use case is already covered:
(a) many clients already support assigning a device name
(b) there’s an existing feature suggestion asking for an option to have that feature for all clients (e.g. browsers…).
I suggest you comment/vote in that 2nd thread if you’re missing the option on some of your device types. This will help avoid to distract or cannibalize votes.
