Simple X - A Native 3rd Party Plex Client for the new Apple TV (4th Gen)

Nice, Simplex featured on 9to5mac: http://9to5mac.com/2015/10/27/first-apple-tv-apps-and-games-unveiled-as-developers-prepare-for-tvos-app-store-launch/

I’m looking into native parsing and display of text based subtitles, as I know this is an important feature for some people. This won’t be ready for launch though.

In my case, Plex is already handling soft subtitles. I use a third party app (iSubtitle) to embed text based subtitles into my movies and tv shows before I import them into iTunes. Alex seems to support these just fine.

So this is no better than plexconnect?
I still need a computer with PMS?

You would need something running PleX Media Server anyway, unless someone figures out a way to run PMS on an Apple TV, which I doubt since there is no mass storage functionality available.

Yeah, this is an essential feature. Nobody likes subtitles burnt into their movies.

What about movies with already embedded soft subtitles? I ma dually add subtitles to movies before importing into iTunes, and Plex handles these just fine.

@Stevenson-Price I love the native UI. Thank you for building this

(1) If a video is struggling to play, does your app support the ability to adjust the streaming bitrate?
(2) Does it display watched/unwatched status? Particularly for TV shows, does it know which episode to watch next?
(3) If I stop watching a movie in the middle, will it pick up where I left off previously when I go to watch it again?

Will you be charging for the app? I will happily pay for such an app

You can adjust the maximum allowed bitrate in the settings, but not while the video is playing. (I think this makes sense for the Apple TV where the speed of your connection to the server is unlikely to vary much)

It shows unwatched status in some places in the app, and I’m working to put it in more places.

Yup, it asks you if you want to resume from where you last were (even from other Plex clients).

Yup, haven’t picked a definite price yet but I will be charging for it a small amount for it.

When will Simplex be available?

Maybe you can have an introductory price for it? Will it be a universal app?

Do any of you guys know if ATV4 supports audio passthrough? This way, ATV4 would not be responsible for audio decoding … that task could fall to the receiver.

Hi.

Will it play Plex channels? If so then we get BBC iplayer!

No channels, at least in this release, sorry.

If you have the ability / means to compile apps yourself, check out Auntie Player: GitHub - Auntie-Player/apple-tv: A proof of concept Apple TV app to access on demand programmes from the BBC.

Love how active you are on this thread and can’t wait to try out your app.

Do you have the video demo ready?

Not yet, hoping to do this tomorrow - sorry for the delay.

What audio and video formats does the Apple TV 4 support?

When I use the Plex app on my PlayStation 4 almost every video needs to be transcoded, which means my DS415 is having a tough time. My Sony Bravia TV supports almost every video format and codec. This means the Plex app for Bravia uses the direct streaming technology if I’m correct.

By the way, great work on the app. Love that you follow the Apple Design Guidelines… I was posting some mockups some time ago click here Definately will be a customer, my ATV4 should be here any time soon.

There are two schools of thought on how to handle the menagerie of video formats: One argues that you should be able to watch any video you want at any time regardless of what format it’s in. The other argues that you should convert any new videos to whichever format is optimally supported by your ecosystem/platform of choice.

I have a lot of Apple devices and I subscribe to the latter. The result is that I never have to worry about files being compatible or deal with annoying issues like stuttering or the inability to skip to any part of a video I like. It’s a little bit of a pain to convert every video before importing, but it only takes a few minutes and I never have to worry about that file again. Personally I use an app called iMedia Converter Deluxe which, unlike some alternatives, has a simple and easy to use interface that doesn’t require you to make 20 decisions every time you just want to convert a file.

With active development of PHT ending and the fact that many (myself included) dislike the new PMP, do you have any plans to release an OSX version of SimpleX? If not is that something you’d consider?

I’m holding out on getting an ATV until there’s a 4K version and currently use my Mac mini server running PHT hooked up via DisplayPort to my 4K TV. I think SimpleX would be great at providing an ATV experience on more powerful hardware.

Yes, you should definitely charge for it. I wonder how people will price AppleTV apps going forward? I think the iOS App Store has probably set people’s expectations as to what they’re prepared to pay.

Just reading this thread is getting me all pumped about the new Apple TV. I hope your app gets approved asap! excellent work on it btw.
