Slave Media Servers for Transcoding?

I ran into a problem with my current Plex setup that my Plex Server/Client box isn’t nearly powerful enough to watch TV and stream to my iPad over the network because it needs to transcode the file to play it on the iPad. I am wondering if configuring the iPad with XBMC and using the PleXBMC plugin might be a way of avoiding the transcoding problem but it did get me to thinking.

Apparently you get all sorts of odd problems trying to have multiple PMS’s on a network and at best syncrhonizing between them is difficult and probably not worth the trouble.

Still, I do have other machines on my network that are often running overnight (not always but sometimes) doing one thing or another but not usually running the CPU flatout.

Would it be worth adding to Plex the ability to run a plex “slave” server that is just handed files for transcoding and streaming to clients so that the main server doens’t need to be burdened with doing to many/any of these?

Maybe it has been suggested and rejected, maybe it does it and I just didn’t know what to look for, but I figured it was worth suggesting it in case it was a novel suggestion. Thanks for taking the time to consider it.
