Smarter smart playlists

I moved from iTunes to Plex about 6 months ago now, and have to say in many ways, Plex is far superior.

The only thing I really miss about iTunes (or TV app as it’s now called) is the smart playlists, within smart playlists.

Example

I used to have a main playlist, which pulled from 4 other smart playlists. The ‘other’ playlists were fairly simple. (if TV show = x, select episode with least recently played, and limit to 1 item)

This ensured that I could have a playlist, with 4 items, and I’d always get the least recently played from each show…a playlist to play in the background while I work.

As I’m currently watching through some 80’s nostalgia, I would love to get this to work (Duke of Hazard, A-Team, Airwolf, Street Hawk and Knight Rider)

Main playlist
-Smart Playlist 1
-Smart Playlist 2
-Smart Playlist 3
-Smart Playlist 4

In Plex, I can:

  • Create a smart playlist
  • Change the sorting on the ‘Date Viewed’ column
  • Limit to 1 item

However, I would need to ability to embed the smart playlists in a master playlist.

+1. Smarter smart playlists all around would be great for former iTunes power users.
