Wish someone would have posted that. Spent the last week converted whole series to mobile optimized and just now sorted and deleted the originals just to have EVERYTHING get deleted. Thinking about what optimized is for I see why but that just sucks, couldn’t there be a setting or something for this?!
You just do “optimized” to safe cpu power if streaming in that quality (especially on low powered NAS).
If you delete the original file, all optimized versions a obsolete.
Plex is not an converter for files. You only create optimized versions so your server doesn’t have to transcode for the specified quality setting.
Plex is converting the files, I wanted the converted versions since most clients are mobile. It’s just odd that after I moved the optimized files to a different location that Plex still deleted them when I deleted the originals. Maybe I need to copy going forward.

That doesn’t sound right. If you moved the files, Plex would have no idea where you moved them to. Plex should have actually seen that the files were missing an re-optimized the files. I can’t imagine how hey got deleted. This is actually the right thing to do if you wanted to save the optimized version and delete the originals. Can you retry with just 1 movie and confirm that Plex doesn’t try to re-optimize after you move the optimized version? I’ve tried it on my end and PMS sees the missing file and starts again, but does not do anything to the one I moved.
Tried again. Ran the optimizer on one episode. It created it in the same location under a Plex Versions dir. I then moved the optimized version out of that directory and to the parent show directory. Plex did not create a new optimized version. I deleted the original episode file and the moved optimized file was also removed. Since it’s the same file Plex must be keeping a pointer to it somehow so even if it’s moved it will still be deleted.
Plex: 1.0.3.2461 on Linux (unraid)
How are you deleting the episode, through Plex?
No, via the file system which makes it even more strange that the optimized version gets deleted too.
That makes no sense. I have no idea why the moved file which is not even tracked by PMS anymore at this point would get deleted. Can you provide step by step what you’ve done and I’ll see if I can reproduce the behavior?
