So, what's a good replacement option for listening to podcasts?

I have to admit, I’m not a big podcast fan. Which means I only have a few, and Plex’s podcast support was just an easy, lazy way to track them.

With Plex’s podcast support ending, what should I be using instead?

I think that depends on where you need to listen to them.

I have an Android phone and I use an app called Podcast Addict, which has tons of features. If I want to listen at home, I cast to a Google speaker or use an earbud. This works for me, I have no need to sync my podcasts to any other devices. Everyone’s different.

Checkout pocketcasts.com – I love it. Powerful. Versatile. I like the cloud feature. If I have a stray mp3 audio file that’s not part of a podcast, I can easily upload it to my pocketcast cloud storage and then listen to it through the same interface as all my podcasts.

BTW, when I want to listen to a podcast on my TV (mainly to take advantage of its nice speakers), I simply cast the pocketcast app to my TV. Of course, that’s a tip that applies to all podcast apps, not just to pocketcast. The ability to cast any podcast app to the TV could be useful for Plex users who used the soon-to-be retired Plex podcast feature to listen to podcasts on their TV.

I appreciate the thought! I ran into a problem with them, and wanted to mention it for anyone else looking for alternatives:

I stopped by Pocketcasts this morning, figuring “why not, let’s give it a shot”. It won’t let me create an account on the web page. Wait, what? Apparently they won’t let you create an account unless you install the pocketcasts app somewhere. Most likely, it’s so they can monetize you, of course, because that’s how it works. That’s frustrating. I don’t plan to use it on my phone.

I mainly just plan to use a web interface, and connect a podcast on a Sonos speaker.

You literally just have to choose the link below that to choose the 14 day trial on the 99 cent per month plan and you’ll get to create a login with username and password. After that, you’ll get access to a web interface and uploading perks.

Just going to second PodcastAddict as an android user, phenomenal app, well developed, constant updates from the developer, really just a great podcast app. Playlists, download capabilities, times checks for updates, search and manual options, categories - it’s solid and full featured.

C’est la vie! I’m still a huge fan – I have the Plus version which is $10/yr and includes the cloud feature that allows you to upload mp3 files – it’s worth it to me just for that since I often download miscellaneous audio from the web and like to listen to it via the same app I use for my podcasts. But there are a lot of options out there for listening to podcasts – and ones that are free and don’t require an app before even creating an account – that is intrusive I must say.

As a 2 state commuter with hours on the road a day, Podcasts (and Audiobooks) are a life saver for me. I’m devastated by this news and spent 4 hours last night (much to my wife’s displeasure of not doing something else for the family) trying to answer this very question.
Multi-Device sync is a must for me, since I start listening in the morning during my routine and continue in my car with an android headunit (so as not to kill my phones battery too quickly). I looked into PocketCasts, but since almost every stream of podcast now is injected with 3rd party extra commercials (on top of most “hard read” ones the podcasters do during their show) I’m was not looking to pay someone for the multi-device sync availability.
So the only option I could find with specific mention of multi-device (and OS if that matters to you) was Google’s Podcasts.
My biggest grip is that I haven’t found a way to mark all the episodes as played in my Podcasts subscriptions (some over years of listening) but for now I’m just using spare time to go in and manually mark each subscription episode by episode as played until I’m done.
