I have an old ESXI server. The CPU is E5-2690 v2. I installed a ubuntu virtual machine and assigned 8 CPU cores to it. Today I installed the latest plex server on it and try the performance of 4k transcoding. The transcoding is totally done by the CPU.
The source movie is 65M 2160p 4K HEVC. I watch the movie with Plex App from a windows 10 PC. And because it’s in the LAN (1G), there is no bandwidth issue. I can stream with the original quality.
For the transcoding test, I converted to 1080p first. I tried 20M, 12M, 10M and 8M. I got buffering every minute, each time maybe 3 or 5 seconds. I checked the server CPU usage, it was not 100% or 99%, only 65% average. Don’t know why the sever cannot use more.
Then I tried 720p 4M. This time, there is no buffering. I can stream the movie without any problem. I also checked the CPU usage, it’s 75% average. Somehow it’s higher than when transcoding 1080p. Don’t know why. And I didn’t find any setting/option to tune it.
Any idea?
