Some problems with Plex for Linux

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488-cc260c476 December 14, 2018
Player Version#: The server version serves me as a player

Hello,

I discovered your program that I use on Linux (Linux Mint LMDE3 / Debian 9.6).

I really like your program but it has some problems…

  • He can read my music from my main SSD, but not from my secondary mecanical hard drives. This is very disabling for me because my audio / video files are on my secondary hard drives. Exemple : /media/philippe/Médias/Musique/Flac

  • I really appreciate your TAG function of music albums + images of album covers. Plex should to tag the folder where is my music, unfortunately he does not do it. When I read my music on my Cambridge Audio CXN V2 I do not have a tag or image album art, this even though Plex has recognized and taged this music library previously.

  • The Chromecast feature makes the Android application crash for my Cambridge Audio CNX V2 and no sound reaches my ears.

  • Add a UPnP server function would be nice.

The day you solve these problems I will definitely buy you a subscription to your software, I hope that day comes soon

Best regards.

solution = build your own stand alone media spitter (with primary hdds)

-wbm

I strongly suggest learning how to administer the machine.

Next, please read here.

This it not a solution my ssd system disk are too small.

The solution is that the developers work on this problem and solve it.

There is nothing for development to fix if the installation location is too small.

All the soft know how to read / write on all the disks but not Plex… This comes only from developers who have not finalized their work.

If they do not want to improve their program, that’s another problem. But I hope they do not think to do nothing, and they correct this problem !! Thank you for your messages, I’m waiting for a response from the development team.

I regret to inform you but you don’t understand what’s happening and how Plex works.

  1. Plex isn’t a privileged user. It is a normal Linux user
  2. Linux is very strict about permissions and does not permit two users (you and plex) to interact without express permissions.
  3. Plex cannot see your files until you give Plex permission.
  4. This is a deliberate action to preserve the integrity of Linux and prevent accidental erasure of media if the user so wishes it.

I strongly suggest you read my support How-To guide and stop telling me I’m wrong when it is you who does not understand how Linux works.

Should you wish to change this default behavior, please read the How-To about Customizing your Plex installation.

This discussion is sterile …

I have known Linux very well for many years. If you do not give it the necessary rights it is clear that it will not work properly.

I can also do it by hand but I do not have the urge to have to do it with each reinstallation/upgrade.

So I wait for a deffinitive solution on your part and not a bricolation to temporarily troubleshoot until the next time the problem arises.

I have been doing this for 35+ years now.

If you want a solution where you have to do nothing, then customize the service to start as

User=root
Group=root

and be done with it. You will have it just the way you want.

I have taken all the steps necessary, in advance, to preserve /etc/systemd/system/plexmediaserver.service.d/override.conf during each Plex upgrade.

I will not compromise Plex on Linux and have it run as root by default.

PS: This is all clearly outlined in the How-To guides I have published should one actually read them.

I also have a little over 35 years of experience in IT.

I will not run it as root. I will not give him access to my system directories.

It’s tiring to have to read wiki… we just want it to work without breaking the head.

I will be one of your paying customers the day or everything will work without problems and without that I have to bricoll the rights for your soft and that the other 3 points will be solved too.

Good evening/night to you.

since this thread has gone absolutely nowhere and my attempts to convey that I have afforded all the means to make Plex work for every Linux user in the way they want, and that Plex won’t change for one user who might be better served using Windows,
