Some questions about Plex.

Hello, i have few questions about plex, my setup is Windows 10 plex server + Plex client on Android TV 6.0.1 (mibox)

  • My biggest concern is the fact that plex need to transcode all my xvid/divx files… Probably all players can read such files on any device that are not 10+ years old, so why it need to transcode it ? It’s really a pain (it use alot of ressources) to have to transcode files while it’s not required.

  • Most decent players supports subtitles, why plex do not support it and need transcode to burn them in the video ? Plex app is using exoplayer and it support subtitles, so…

  • Why i can’t edit the cast/actors metadatas ? Some old not popular movies can’t be matched and sometimes it’s required to edit them but i can’t add actors so it break the function to search by actors, anyone know how to edit actors metadata ? can’t find anything on google :s

i love plex but those 3 points are really drawbacks (i mean if i share my videos with my whole family i will need to have uber CPU 8-12 cores intel or even a dual CPU with a whole pc dedicated to it at least to be able to transcode multiples xvid and others movies with subtitles, all that transcoding for things that can be read without transcoding with no problem on any software/hardware player), thanks you

XVID / DIVX are really ■■■■■■ formats, that’s why it has to transcode because there are known issues with MPEG-4 in avi containers and the like. Plex do support subtitles on a lot of their players, most of it comes down to naming of them correctly. You can’t add actors metadata.

Neither is a streaming format. So in a nutshell you are loading your streaming server with media that isn’t native streamable. See the problem?

Depends on the type of subtitles you have. If you use a text based subtitle like SRT it won’t have to normally be burnt in but if they are graphic subtitles then Plex has not choice in the matter.

This is long overdue. We should (but can’t) edit actor info.

The format of your media is something you can control. You should adopt a good conversion strategy to get your files prepared properly before you add them to your plex server. Then unless you are bandwidth limited almost everything will direct play.

i have remuxed one .avi file to .mp4 and now it Direct Play without transcoding the video and hogging the cpu!!
Why plex can’t do it on the fly instead of transcoding ? isn’t what Direct Stream should be ?

edit, only mp4 container is working, if i remux to mkv the video is still transcoded (transcoding, not Direct Stream… why? and it take much time to load the mkv vs the avi/mp4)
