Sony Android TV not passing through TrueHD audio, but transcoding

Server Version#: 1.41.2.9200
Player Version#: Android TV 10.24.0.2257

The Plex app on my Sony Bravia 55X8000H tv has stopped passing through TrueHD 7.1 Atmos. It always used to do it with no issue and the “Dolby Atmos” text was displayed on my soundbar (Samsung Q990D). I don’t know what happened but Plex decided from now on it is going to transcode the audio with Transcode reason: TrueHD audio is not supported by the device. Which is not correct. The soundbar supports it. It is connected via HDMI eARC and I triple checked all the settings on the TV and everything is setup to passthrough/bitstream the audio to the soundbar.

The fact that it did work perfectly not too long ago and is now not working, tells me that something has changed. Either Plex is detecting the hardware capabilities incorrectly in a new app version, or Sony messed something up with an update or something on my settings may have changed. I did factory reset the TV a while back and I can’t remember if the issue existed before or after that… Any help, suggestions or insights will be greatly appreciated. I am extremely disheartened about my height channels and audio quality down the drain when playing Atmos content now with the transcode. I can remedy this by adding in my Nvidia Shield - but it was sent for an RMA replacement with Nvidia and that might take months still

P.S I have not been able to find a way to block Audio Transcoding outright either. Is that possible?

The TV never passed TrueHD from the Plex app.

Their are two types of Atmos for home audio: TrueHD + Atmos (found in Blu-ray discs), and Dolby Digital Plus+ Atmos, used by streaming services.

No TV passes TrueHD from TV based apps. It is a TV manufacturer restriction. TrueHD will be transcoded by Plex to a supported format and the Atmos information list in the process.

The TV will passthrough Dolby Digital Plus Atmos.

If you want TrueHD + Atmos, acquire a streaming device that supports TrueHD passthrough and connect it to an HDMI input on the sound bar or TV.

The TV will passthrough TrueHD from devices attached to an HDMI input.

You’ll want an Nvidia Shield Pro (as you mentioned in your post) or Amazon FireStick 4K / 4K Max Gen 2.

The Shield will also passthrough DTS-HD MA and DTS:X.

The FireStick will passthrough only the core DTS 5.1, discarding the -HD MA & :X portion.
