Standalone Music Video section (without dependence on music files!)

The music video support in Plex is absolutely atrocious. +1 for proper support.

A music video library type that would not be dependent on audio files would be awesome! The current implementation is such a PITA :frowning:

I’d like it to work the way iTunes does: one library for all my music, some of which is audio-only and some of which has video. All the metadata, browsing, playback, etc., should work exactly like existing music libraries, with the added feature that a video plays when certain tracks are playing.

I’ll agree with this. I don’t want to have to dig to find music videos. I just want to put them on and shuffle them for party background noise.

Definitely need a continous play mode for music videos. Very aggravating to have a music video or two play, and have video playback just stop while the ā€œUp Nextā€ screen displays. Even if Play ā€œUp Nextā€ videos automatically is enabled there is a pause of several seconds between videos as the ā€œUp Nextā€ timer counts down.

+1 for a music video library. I currently use the ā€œOther Videosā€ library but have to manually tag and manually set and lock the ā€œOriginally Availableā€ date for EVERY video. All 1,521 of them. The payoff is the ability to make smart playlists by genre, year, etc. but a dedicated library with a music agent would make life much easier.

+1 for this! It’s really nice in the current integration, but would love to have it as a separate library…

+100,000. Music videos should be a fundamental element of Plex, like music, tv shows and movies. It can still be part of music, but it needs to be well handled and powerfully controlled, not just ā€˜tacked on’. It’s omission is why I haven’t paid for a plex pass for years of using plex. I would use Plex for some of my media and another management tool for music videos (and decent music playlists), I only see value in a media platform that can handle ALL of my media types (only the recent PP discount got me onboard). Plex programmers - git’er done!!! You will see the rewards.

Pleas hit ā€œlikeā€ This thread is around for years with quite some replies, but only 2 likes so far… It does not seem to attract sufficient visibility that this is a burning platform.

I have quite some musicvideo-only albums (e.g., GnR "Welcome to the Videos), but none of them is getting picked up. They are properly tagged MP4/M4V files. This feels more like a bug rather than a feature request to me. Hope this will eventually be addressed once Plex is becoming more serious about music/musicvideo support.

Unfortunately, my musicvideo-only albums don’t show up in Plex at all. I have quite a few of them. Is there some work-around to make this work?

Any chance to look into this?

I agree. I’ve also been waiting for better support for stand-alone music library.

The only workaround I’ve found to include them in Plex the official way is to make a fake five second silent MP3 named with the Artist- Song and add that to your music library. Of course then you end up with a blank song in your music, but it’s super short so it doesn’t disrupt the music TOO much.

I agree, I did a search but couldn’t find a thread so I created my own. It just got closed because of this one but I think mine has more info about what needs to be done.

Simply put, the current way it does music videos is not good. It is ok if you only want to watch the one, but who does that? No one. Most people want everything to play and not have to choose a new one once the current has finished playing… Imaging this, you put a song on, and then it doesn’t play the next one… You’d get pretty annoyed very fast. Also, there needs to be a toggle switch that will allow you to play music video instead of audio file if you have one. There needs to be a dedicated music video section you can use if you want to, that not only links the music videos to the artists, but also puts them all in a dedicated music videos section like tv shows and movies, and has all the info for them there. This section does need a lot of work, and if all this happens it would be excellent.

Completely agree.
I’ve just migrated to plex from JRiver, mainly due to moving to a NAS and TV based app.
Generally I’m loving the Plex interface, but the handling of music videos is really poor.
I’ve only imported a small selection so far, but it’s incredibly clunky to have to keep going back to the menu and selecting the next video to play.
I don’t have my music playing in Plex (nor do I want to) as I have a Squeezebox setup, so a dedicated library function for music videos would be really good to have.

Please Plex development team!

4 years after I created this topic (mind you - plenty of others have asked for this feature before me, and after me)

And here we all are. No closer to proper, dedicated music video library support.

Plex, please look into this feature before we all die of old age.

By the time I am 80, I would like to enjoy my K-pop collection (or whatever I am listening to by then) in a neat syncable library that isn’t a half-baked effort hanging off the back of the ā€œmusicā€ libraries (utterly useless because it depends on having music files for every artist that you have music video files for).

All we need is for music videos to attempt to get their metadata from somewhere, but otherwise at least just be indexed by Artist and as neat thumbnails and not have the files required to be ā€œpersonal videosā€ or to be formatted like TV shows or any other BS workaround that has been shared on these forums for the past DECADE that I have been waiting for this feature.

Please. Before we all die.

I’ve up-voted this thread as I, too, have lots of music videos - and I won’t ever use PLEX for my music collection as I play them through a high-end DAC.

I get tolerable function now, tho, by having an extra ā€˜movies’ folder for ā€˜Music Videos & Concerts’ organized by folders with artists’ names. Concerts are often in IMDB and that’s cool, but for the music vids, I’ve created multiple collections for them: ā€œMusic Videosā€ (for all of them) then also adding ā€˜artist name’ if an important artist, then a ā€˜genre’ of sorts. That last is really limited as I don’t want too many as it’s a lotta work. So I’ve got ā€œhigh energyā€ vids, and ā€œrelaxingā€ vids and ā€œdanceā€ and ā€œrapā€ and I think that’s about it. So when I do the dishes, I hit shuffle for my high energy vids and they’re done in no time.

But yeah, if PLEX could have a dedicated music videos section and scrape metadata that would make this much easier. And the shuffle could work better and not pause 15sec after the longer music vids. At least make that pause configurable!

I ended up making a Movie library for music videos, and a separate Movie library for long form videos like concerts etc. I also made a script to automatically create an .NFO file in the music videos folder that adds the video as a movie and the artist as a Collection, and I’m using XBMCnfoMoviesImporter to import the whole thing. It’s not a real solution but until we have that (if it happens before we die) it works pretty good:

Hello
The solution that I made for this, is put it in Other Videos, but the problem is that no Metadata for the videos, the videos aren’t in order, I want order it for Artist, Genre, etc. but not put them in Music, is the worst Idea if you want to create a Playlist.
IMVDB has all the facilities to create a metadata plugin. In github has a few fail prototypes, but no ones work.
Please Plex

Voted! Very surprised to see that music videos are dependent on audio files under the current implementation. Plex’s Music library interface looks great but I have no use case for it. Would love to see music videos as its own library type and not have to use the silent mp3 file ā€œhackā€.

Also as previously mentioned, a continuous play mode would be amazing for this too.

@tikilab What platform is your script for, and is it something you would mind sharing? Also, do you have a link where I can get started with XBMCnfoMoviesImporter? I searched, but I didn’t see anything active. I’m not going to hold my breath waiting on Plex.
