Bumping this up to keep it alive.
Interested in this too.
I so need this. Music videos are just like music except there is no static picture in there. I want Artist - Title to appear when selecting them or playing them. Right now, it is just title and the artist is a performer in the video. My ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags are right. I will reorganize them how ever you want but I cannot necessarily tie a music file to every one of my music video files.
Music Video is my only complaint about Plex at this point.
Iād be incredibly interested in this. I really wish there was an agent that cataloged music videos the way that songs are.
GREAT NEWS!!!, The new Plex Movie agent supports Music Videos!!, I upgraded my Music Videos Library and for my surprise, the music videos have info!!, Well, not all videos, but the majority of them, with name of director, summary, Singers/Band Members and any celebrity that appear in the Music Videos. Only create a Music Video Library using Movie and choose Plex Movie Agent. The name of archives is Artist - Song Name, and thatās It. Now, if anyone can create front posters for Music Videos thatās will be great!
Yes Iāve had a music video library for a while now and if you set your library to dr_raymond27ās settings it does try to include a short intro, Director, Cast etc. So this IS a step forward!
BUT
I think having an original Music video library as previously suggested makes sense.
Having an option to list by Artist, just like audio files/albums would be a game changer as well as perhaps having the ability to link to the Artists audio libraries would be awesome.
I was also thinking that wouldnāt it be useful and extremely cool to have an option of adding custom titles to a āvideoā. This could appear over the video after say⦠5-10 seconds (or customisable), just like MTV, The Chart Show and just about every music video broadcaster has done.
This time the user being able to control how its displayed. This could be position over the video, typeface and style/size then transition (fade, blur or whatever) off screen. Iād personally like the option to include perhaps a LP, CD cover of the single itself or from the album it came from. Oh and of course the date.
Apologies if this feature has been talked about already but yeah it could be coolio
I setup my music videos as other videos in a separate library several years ago. I decided to sort them today as the library is a bit messy. I looked up the recommended settings and created a local media assets library but the guidance on refers to the library assets and where the videos can be stored - rather than the library itself. I spent a few hours trying to sort this before realising that Plex was expecting my videos folder to be listed with my music folder in the music library.
Hopefully Plex will add a music videos section which is separate from movies and music files.
I am behind this. I want one place to go for all my music videos, no matter if they are band recordings or extras from something. This is a much needed feature.
This is really promising! Now if they can just call this special instance āmusic videosā and instead of āmoviesā, weāll be laughing. Dear Plex devs: duplicate the Plex Movie agent to Plex Music Video agent⦠then make any music video specific tweaks as required⦠so these arenāt lumped in other searches as āmoviesā.
Hey Devs! Can we get a reply please?
So I have been using Movie library for music videos, I find if I use music, it will only play the audio. The movies library reads itās infomation from the filename, the Music library will read ID3 tags to obtain its data, which is then displayed and grouped according to the ID3 tag, and the metadata it can find matching what the engins find online. Wouldnāt it be easier to assign the same tag information retreival, and grouping on the GUI to movies and call the library Music Videoās?
Hello there!
Been messing with Plex for several years now. I have been carting around a gigantic music video collection since the early 2000s (there are 4000+ items in it) and after jumping around to many programs over the years (XMBC, Servio etc) Plex is going to be my forever home. I have the dedicated global Music Videos folder set up so my Music library reacts to it. Iāve also started a dedicated Music Video library (MOVIES library type, Plex Movie agent) for them so I can have metadata in them and sort by director and make collections (TV appearances by specific talk or award show performances, Themed, subgenres). THIS RIGHT HERE is the feature Iāve been searching for my entire life. I just wanted a program I could spit a bunch of Puff Daddy (or whoever!) videos into, and using the IMDB I could sort them by director and see which ones Paul Hunter or Hype Williams or Spike Jonze did. Thatās an incredible new reality that Iām just getting with Plex. (XMBC did it, but so much lead time had to go into research and prepping NFO files)
One snafu with all this thatās preventing me from living in a utopia: Opening up all these crazy titles to IMDB via the Plex Movies agent brings back a lot of garbage results, that arenāt smartly filtered. If I accidentally hit a button, or change an agent on a whim half of my library will (after 6 hours) match to a Korean romantic comedy from 2005.
Here is what I suggest: Rather than making a dedicated Music Video subcategory in Libraries, why not just have a dedicated music video agent. All you would really have to do here on a logical level is filter down the IMDB or Movie Database results to Shorts or anything below 10 minutes maybe. Maybe limit the results to one language, maybe have some way to filter the results by decade to the range of time the artist appears active in the music side of the database, who knows. Could it pull from the local file path for context clues maybe? The artist is often in the path. Maybe the thumbnails didnāt necessarily need to be Poster dimensions in this scenario and could also be 4:3 when applicable.
In any event, I love whatās going on here, and Iām so close to getting it. I would just love some sort of feeling of security.
Before anyone asks āwhy is this necessary they are all on YouTube??ā I would think deeply a moment about who exactly uploads these files to YouTube and if you should be putting all your eggs in one companyās basket.
Whoa, thatās a good idea! Plex, letās do this!

(By the way, weāve been asking for such a thing since 2016. Seven years later we are no closer. But itās still a good idea!)
Wanted to check back in here with my thoughts on a few data sources:
IMDB seems to be working, but newly added content takes several months til it hits what Plex can access for some reason.
IMVDB has been a website many people have been pointing to but in my experience it has 1/3 of the content that old terrific music video database site (now dead and gone) had and there is no way to register an account to add new info. Been trying for years. Dead site! Not worth it!
āMusic Video Wikiā same thing.
MVDBase I think was the good one, had first person sources, and every other site that has attempted to replace it has been a fundraising scam.
Letās keep throwing the attention to IMDB, itās logical, itās real, it works.
And to clarify my bit about garbage search results: Thereās gotta be a slightly smarter way to do this. As it stands if you type in āNovember Rainā into the match window the Guns N Roses video is the 7th result. I think if there are few certainties in the world it is that if anyone has a file on their computer with November Rain in the file name, it is the video for November Rain.
just trying to bump this back up to their attention.
As one of the reason I wanted to build my Plex server is to categorize and organize my multimedia collection, I would love to be able to have a library for Music Videos. There is nothing better than sitting back and watching some good memories.
I would love it too. My clunky Music Video library is still rolling along, using XBMCnfoMoviesImporter, some paper clips, and gum. One day Pinocchio may turn into a real boy.
Was working on my Music Video library and dealing with clunky work arounds, so I thought Iād come back and give this a bump. Still a feature Iād really like to see.

If you add a music video library, by linking it with music, you can listen to the music and choose to open the music video , thatās just great.
Is your Music Video library still working w/XBMCnfoMoviesImporter? Trying to set up a similar library myself and canāt figure out exactly what Iām supposed to set on the library to get it to work. Thanks!
