Due to a recent disaster involving modular power supplies and my 28tb of storage (note: EVGA and Corsair SATA cables are NOT interchangeable…) I’m in a position where I’m about to start my Plex venture again after some 15years of accumulated content (fortunately all my personal stuff was backed up to the cloud so my life is still worth living).

There are two things I’m considering,

  1. Going all-cloud (because I’m about to get full fibre so local only 4k should be a thing of the past)
  2. on-demand sourcing

What I can’t find any info on is point 2. After so long of managing what we want using the normal candidates (Sonarr, Radarr, Sab, plex requests…) “in advance”, I’d like to use Plex as the interface for sourcing content. By that what I mean is I’d like to reverse the workflow:

  1. User fancies watching something
  2. User searches Plex
    3a) User finds something, yay
    3b) User finds nothing, but in the background, the search is registered as a miss and content is sourced. Due to super fast fibre or remote seedbox, content is ready in a jiffy.

I hoped web hooks would help here, but no luck. Ombi still requires a separate interface / request. I rather make the new set up at least partly demand driven instead of thinking in advance of everything we might want (and storing it). The intention would also be to age out untouched stuff (which can be replenished should it be searched again). FYI I use nzb/indexer subs so downloads are pretty fast.

Can I make this work? Is it a stupid idea?

People who store their media remotely have to worry about the number of API calls all the time, so forget things like deep analysis, auto detection of changes and others.
I never used it but from what I’ve heard, it does not worth it.

Discussing what? Features that aren’t available? I don’t want to discuss seed boxes. Its the mechanism that feeds them.

I’m not set on using a seedbox, it was just an idea to avoid having to re-buy all my HDDs.
I wouldn’t want to store remote and transcode local, then I’m always dragging 4k down (possibly to transcode and send it back out).

No we don’t and if you choose to talk about “the mechanism that feeds them” on this forum you account will be banned from this forum. Plex is not a seedbox and will never be one or have integrated features for them. if you wish to talk about them or how they work, do so elsewhere.
