Storage HD Type and Location

Hello all - I recently got my Plex server set up and am wondering if there is any issue with using a USB 3.0 portable hard drive as my primary storage device? Reason I ask is I currently have an unused 4tb portable drive and 2tb plug in drive, so I would like to use the one with more space.

Also have a kind of related second question - is it considered “better” to have the storage drive attached to my router and set up as a NAS or directly plugged into my server box (Shield TV). Figured connected to the device that is hosting the server was better, but it seems like many people use a NAS config. Any reason behind that?

Appreciate any feedback people have

No issue at all and many do.
I would advise disabling “Empty trash automatically after every scan.”

Probably just down to prefernce. Personally I would be attaching to the Shield.

Thanks for the info back. I was a little concerned since some things I read say a portable drive wasn’t as reliable and was not made to be “always on with lots of read / writes” or whatever, but honestly my plex server activity is likely not very substantial (primary use will be live TV streaming).

What is that trash thing you recommended I disable doing otherwise?

Basically if the USB device with your media gets disconnected by mistake it stops the server thinking the files have been deleted.
So make sure that box is unchecked.
