Storage solution , atm just hdd

Hei there

At the moment I use kodi with the plex as media player. But I want to have the server experience. At the moment I have my media on an external hdd (4tb) the wd elements. Im pretty sure that this drive isnt capable to be on for multiple hours, one film is good but for more no. What could be a simple solutin? We have a nas but its used for much other stuff so my library won’t fit in it.

thx guys

The drive isn’t capable of running for multiple hours? I’m skeptical about that. I’ve been using a WD external drive to hold my media (WD 4TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive) for 2 years now and it’s on all the time. Haven’t had any problems.

My older wd my passport ultra has a closed case without openings for the heat, that things gets ■■■■■■■ hot

If you are worried about heat, but still want to use the drive. Take the case apart and remove the drive, then put it in a desktop as a secondary drive or purchase a usb case that has better airflow to put it in.

To reiterate what @Nights0ng said you probably want a drive running all the time out of the drive case and into your computer case

Honestly there are two ways to go about the larger, more reliable storage question

First you can buy a nas - if you go cheaper you need another computer running as a server - if you buy a more expensive nas with more cpu power you might not need another computer

You can build out a file server with multiple drives internal to it - this is good for drive life and it will be cheaper than the nas solution - you can even build out with freenas or its like so it works like a nas

From there you can go more complicated up to a build like mine where i have an external DAS holding a dozen drives connected to my server with SAS connections - the Do It Yourself way is definitely cheaper in the short and long term but is a lot more work

What are your recommendations for a “good inexpensive” NAS?

Probably looking for something with 4 bays and capable of the latest SATA specs.

Regards,

Everything will support “the latest sata specs” as those specs are pretty much ancient at this point

In terms of NAS hardware (since I don’t own one) we can see if @ChuckPa has a good recommendation

The thing is we have alredy a Nas but witj only 3tb storage and its used for other things. I have a pretty old pc with an intel core duo haha could I use that? Probally not the boars is too ■■■■…

With harddrives, if it doesn’t need to do server stuff it doesn’t need to be that beefy…just needs to have space for drives and proper cooling

@RobEh

So you need a general purpose NAS? No need or desire to run any apps on it?
How many bays do you need now? How many do you think you might add in the next two years? Double what you think you’ll add.

What’s that final number?

Do you have a target budget or NTE cap?

I would says 3-4 bays, so 6 would be a good place to start.

I really don’t need much for apps running. I have a server running everything i need.

Right now I have 3 externals all plugged in. It is slow to transfer files to and from.

Of course, I want it all for nothing. But seriously, reliability is important, but then again, so is price.

I think I would want the capability of RAID 5.

Thanks,

There are lots of options. If you want something ready made, look into synology and qnap. If you want to build something yourself but is easy to manage, I recommend unraid. If you want to go hardcore, check out this article for software: https://blog.linuxserver.io/2017/06/24/the-perfect-media-server-2017/

My main server is based on a xeon e5 with 8 cores, 16 threads. It runs many docker containers and several VMs. I have about 14 drives attached with 24TB of data storage and 2 parity drives. It’s in a rosewill rackable case with three 5-in-3 hot swap cages.

I also have a much smaller backup server with a cheap pentium g4600 that is running plex with hardware transcoding
