Suggestions - Best device for plex on older tv

Hey,

I currently use Plex Media Player through my HTPC and on the inbuilt player on another LG TV.

I’m looking to get a device for another non smart TV we have. Not looking to spend a fortune. Would like to be able to use the companion app in android to cast to the device. Which device has the best Plex Player App?

I am looking at either of the following:

  1. Google Chromecast (New Version)
  2. Now TV (Black)
  3. Amazon Fire Stick
  4. Roku Stick

I have a server that can transcode, but direct play ability would be a bonus. I would also ideally like to have Netflix too, (which might rule out the NowTV box).

Any comment/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Given those 4 choices, I’d choose the Roku Stick. Especially the newly released one. In my opinion it’s the best of that bunch.

The only one I have experience with is the Chromecast (both new and old models) and overall I’m very satisfied with them. But transcoding isn’t really an issue for me since those devices aren’t my primary devices.

I’ll second the Roku stick out of that list, but as @pruitt62 said, make sure it’s the new one. I can’t recommend the older stick (model 3500), but the new one (3600) is just as fast as a Roku 3.

Also, I’d remove the nowTV from the list. You can only sideload the “Classic” version of the Plex channel because it doesn’t have full channel store.

(I may be a little biased being a Roku developer  )

I can’t seem to find anywhere to buy the 3600 in the UK/Ireland.

The 3500 is reduced to £29 (€38). It is only for occasional use and would not be my primary device.

Sorry, it looks as though the initial release is for North America only, and is available on April 20th. The older Roku stick works, it’s just a bit slower and that may not matter much if it’s not a primary device.

Do you have any idea when it might be released in Europe/UK/Ireland? I don’t want to wait too long, but would wait a few weeks if it were only that…
