+1 This should be totally doable… treat Audiobooks like a TV series with each track/chapter as an episode so it can be marked as completed. Having the track progress feature has been a nice start. In the mean-time, I’ve been paying with Booksonic, but having all of my media “under one roof” would be awesome.
I think Plex should buy Booksonic and implement the BS server in PMS
Booksonic is a very good software, but I want all my media under one roof too. I hope this will one day happen to us.

Throwing in my 2 centsFrom an audiobook perspective and in priority i would suggest the following:
- separate category from music (different icon perhaps a book)
- treat albums as books (album title as Book Title, album artist as Author etc)
2.1. keep track of listening position per book
2.2. show progress through book (ie combine total run length of all tracks in the book)
2.3. it is the unit of sync (ie a sync a book)- sleep timer in the UI (easilly accessible)
- skip buttons (1,5,30 minutes) with a run length that can run into 40-50 hours sliding a slider is almost impossible
- automatic download of covers and descriptions (perhaps amazon, etc)
nice to have
6. auto sleep reset - when sleep timer is started, automatically restart the timer when any action is done in the UI (including volume change) since it indicates attention / lack of sleep
7. show track number together with track title field (on player and in list). Quite often audiobook comes with a 20-200 tracks with the same name ie the same Chapter name.Great list I agree with what you have said

Been +1’ing these for over a year now, still holding out that it’s coming! (Wouldn’t be too much to ask to get someone from Plex to drop in and say “Yeah we have some people coding that in still”, just so we know you haven’t given up or shelved itI am at the point that I worry that this feature request has evolved to be far larger than originally requested and since the original request was fulfilled to and extent this has been pushed to the side. I would like to make a new request or change the first post here to update to what we are requesting now. Without any word from plex I do not know the best course of action and I do not want to loose the number of likes/votes that the first post here has received and lose our highly popular status.
How was the original request fulfilled, when it doesn’t work? Plex never remembers track position for any album/audiobook, and I have the feature enabled on the server.
The way it works for me is at best it remembers the track and position but when play is hit it plays from the start of the track.
The first image before-play is from just after logging into plex. The next image is taken after pressing the play button.
Yes please
Still looking forward to this feature…

This exact issue happens to me as well. Listening to Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom right now, a 14-hour long audiobook. Not split up into chapters, so having to scrub my way through each time is more than a little annoying. >.<
Today I checked out the Emby Media Server. This test was very interesting.
First I thought this is a clone of PMS, but I can use parental control and a audiobook section witch can remeber my playback position. And this feature works realy awesome .
This are two things of my feature request list that Plex does not want to fulfill. The company spends so much time with crapy features like DVR and Plex in the cloud and it’s no time for so important things like a audiobook section. Maybee I will ■■■■ on my Plex lifetime subscription and change my system to Emby.
EMBY DOES AUDIOBOOKS??? I, too, am a lifetime PLEXPass member… But… I HAVE to check this out!
If you are going to install something new think about madsonic. The developers actually care about your feedback. (FYI: it does audiobooks and podcasts).
I’m not going to stop using plex anytime soon but they lost my loyalty with the handling of this requests.
In January this request will have been out for 5 years. It is a simple request.
P.S. Something call booksonic exists. I have not used it though. Even though madsonic is primary targeted at music it works well enough for me for audio books. I also like the podcast feature.
I use Booksonic since a half year and it works very fine. But it’s a one man project and I’m worry about the future. From one day to another the project can stop. But my reason is one for all. In the moment I have installed PMS, Booksonic and Emby for tests. Btw… the Emby Android app is broken, there is a problem with the playback position
It must be so hard to program this feature
Booksonic looks quite good. I would have used that. If only they/he had an iOS app.
I don’t think the booksonic author will ever publish an ios app. The Android app have enough bugs they will never fixed. This is a big problem of a one man show.
Love Plex. There are three futures that I would expect Plex to have by now:
- Better handling of positions for audiobooks
- Podcast manager
- Better music manager
They are crucial for the Plex to be able to expand beyond it’s current technology oriented audience. As an example, I was trying to hook my wife to Plex, but she abandoned it after running several times in audiobook “jump” issue. She liked the overall idea of Plex though, and asked me several times when do I think it is going to come out of “betta” version.
Hope someone from development team is reading this.
Sadly,. Don’t think ANYONE from PLEX, let alone their actual development team has looked at this thread in months.
Recently I have discovered that for audiobooks there ARE alternative programs like EMBY - which I am currently testing.
After a few years, I’ve been to loose faith in the lip-service the guys at PLEX have paid to those of us who have paid them.
7 years a Plex subscriber am I, with a badge award for brand loyalty, but … a reluctant recruit to Emby which seems to promise better audiobook handling.

Saving the audio position should be an easy thing to implement and would be greatly appreciated. This has been added already to Plex you just need to select store playback position when you creat a music library
It doesn’t work, at least not on the Windows UWP software. No matter what you do, the music/audio track will restart from the beginning.

The Android app too. This is for me the greatest problem, I want listen my audiobooks on the way to work and back home.

Me too. So, we’ve established that this tickbox does nothing, even if you are streaming from the server.
How did that get past testing - the feature doesn’t work at all (at least on Android or Windows).

I’ve also tested it on the Web interface (server running on Windows). Again, it doesn’t store track progress, and always starts at the beginning of the track.
Does this work on any platform, or is it literally just a “tick-box exercise”?
