I suppose one big hinderance of Booksonic for me is that I can’t recommend it to my family who also use Plex. Not because it’s no good but because they use Apple devices. So if I found a good solution for myself, it wouldn’t work for them, which means I would have to find a wholly different solution for them and possibly organize their audiobooks differently than I do mine.
But yes, I have also chapterized my audiobooks with inAudible and mp3tag. It is a very time-consuming process for books that have 70+ or 100+ chapters, and the original bookmarks were all screwed up (thanks Audible… -.- ), but it’s worth it. I like seeing what chapter I’m specifically on, or what the chapter name is if there’s a subtitle.

Omg right? I just got done ripping “The Talisman” from 24 CDs to FLAC and chapterizing them, and that took about 3 days.

My sister in law uses an iPhone to access my Booksonic server, she says that she just goes to the server address and logs in. Although, I haven’t seen her do it myself (she lives about 8hrs away) so I don’t know how she’s doing it. When I try to stream from the server, it doesn’t save my playback position. My best guess is that she’s maybe downloading the files and then using iTunes?
But yeah, Booksonice device compatibility is kind of garbage. It works well if you’re exclusively using android devices, which is unfortunate, and the complete motivation for me switching to an NVIDIA shield tv. I love my Roku, but being unable to sync my audiobook position is a deal breaker for me nowadays.
So… is the feature for remembering audiobook’s positions actually enabled/released in plex? I started to read through 22 pages of people voting for the options since the year 2013 and figured I’d just ask the question.

It is…a little bit. Under advanced for music libraries there is the setting to store track progress. However this does just that. The track progress. It does not currently store album progress so if you keep your books in one track per book you are good otherwise you need to remember which track you are on.

I have my books split by chapter, so I remember what track I’m on by screenshotting my Plex app before stopping a book for an extended period or in case I might fall asleep if listening while resting.
This seems like a pretty simple feature that already exists for multi-file movie videos.
In addition to the existing option to remembering track progress, maybe add an additional field for remembering “album” progress. Or, heck, it could be just a new library option to define if the remembered progress is for tracks or albums. People with audiobooks in a library could just select “album”.
Looks like they have redone how the voting works so make sure you all click vote at the top of the thread so that the people at Plex know we still want this!
While true that it is there and works (sometimes) it has some issues that really should be addressed. Issues I’ve ran into include:
if you have a book sync’d (on Android at least, not sure on others) it won’t pick up the current locations
The file won’t save it’s location after the set watched cutoff, which is like 90% or so, which means on a longer audiobook such as IT for example which is 44 hours long for the last 4 1/2 hours or so it will not remember the location you left off on.
Perhaps a new thread needs to be made requesting that these things be fixed in relation to this feature instead of this one continuing.
The biggest issue with this is that while it will remember track progress, it does not remember album progress. So you have to remember which track you are on when you come back (or combine all tracks into one giant file, which some people do). And as pointed out by adamskoog, if you leave a track after it’s 90% completed it will not remember your place. So combining your tracks into one file doesn’t completely resolve the issue.
Weird that we only have a limited number of “votes” now - is this a new change with Discourse now that there aren’t separate forums for the freeloaders (that’s a joke btw, the ability to use plex for free is very important to get people introduced to how great it is) and the plex pass members.
Anyway, my phone is absolutely POLLUTED with giant audiobook files. We can’t be the only ones. They’re an absolutely perfect of something that is traditionally used on long trips/car rides/bus rides etc, that would be wonderful to move off of our phone storage and stream off of our personal servers.
